On Jan. 11, Drew O’Connor ’22 was called up to the Pittsburgh Penguins taxi squad — a major step toward professional play for the former Big Green breakout hockey star.
In his July 9 campus-wide email explaining the College’s decision to cut five varsity athletics programs — men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s swimming and diving and men’s lightweight rowing — College President Phil Hanlon encouraged former varsity athletes to consider club teams. Some athletes on the cut teams, however, have read the guidance in Hanlon’s email as an ill-thought-out consolation.
Despite not knowing if they will be able to compete in their first collegiate seasons, incoming student-athletes in the Class of 2024 have continued to train as they await the College’s decision on fall term.
Ben Martin ’20’s path to collegiate lacrosse nearly brought him to Lehigh University. Martin was committed to play for the Mountain Hawks until his junior year of high school, when Lehigh’s defensive coordinator Brendan Callahan was hired as head coach for the Big Green.
Varsity athletes aren’t the only ones who lost their spring season. Club sport athletes also missed out on proper ends to their careers and clarity about the future of their teams.
