Heavy snowfall and extreme temperatures have made this Hanover’s second coldest February since records began in 1893, Northeast Regional Climate Center climatologist Jessica Spaccio said, with an average temperature of 11.6 degrees Fahrenheit, nearly half the expected average of 23 degrees.
With over a year of experience crowdsourcing student ideas, including the now-implemented digitization of timesheets for on-campus employees, the renovation of Novack Cafe and the addition of cell phone charging stations to Baker-Berry Library, Improve Dartmouth recently made changes to its site and plans for program expansion and ways to increase online participation, co-founder Gillian O’Connell ’15 said.
While off-campus programs cancelled certain programs recently — including a German language study program in Berlin and an Arabic language study abroad in Tangier, Morocco — due to a lack of committed interest, the College has also developed new programs for the upcoming year to meet student interest. These programs included a film foreign study program in Los Angeles that began in winter 2014 and an exchange term in Cuba that will start next fall.
From classics like the polar bear plunge and human dogsled race to newer traditions like Phi Delta Alpha fraternity’s fourth-annual chili cook-off, this year’s “Clash of Carnivals: Superheroes vs. Villains”-themed Winter Carnival is packed with programming.
College President Phil Hanlon and Dartmouth United Way campaign co-chair Gail Gentes will boost Dartmouth’s total contribution, with a pledge to match $25 for every donation made from Jan. 15 until the end of the campaign on Feb. 14, Amy Olson, the College’s senior media relations officer, said in an email.
