Obama stresses healthcare at Jesse's

Associated Press Senator and Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama (D-Ill.)focused on restoring integrity to American government and managing the ailing healthcare system in a panel discussion with Upper Valley residents at Jesse's Restaurant in Hanover on Monday. To begin the event, Obama delivered a short speech in which he emphasized what he believes to be the alienation that many Americans feel from the federal government. "Across the board, people feel that their voices are not being heard in Washington," he said. Obama took issue with the lobbyist culture of Congress and the White House and attacked the Bush administration for incompetence and cronyism.

Alum praises important role of sorority in business world

In the first speech of the Dartmouth's Distinguished lecture series, College trustee and advertising executive Karen Francis '84 explained how her membership in Kappa Alpha Theta sorority at Dartmouth has been crucial to her professional success. Francis, the chairman and chief executive officer of Publicis and Hal Riney, spoke to a mostly female audience at Alpha Xi Delta sorority Friday evening. In 1982, Francis joined with 10 girls to push for the formation of a new sorority on campus.

Alumnae connect Greek life, success

The Panhellenic Council will kick off this year's Dartmouth's Distinguished lecture series Friday with an event at Alpha Xi Delta sorority featuring Karen Francis '84, who was the founder and president of Kappa Alpha Theta, now Epsilon Kappa Theta sorority. The program aims to give students opportunities to hear from exemplary alumnae who were involved with the Greek system during their time at the College, Panhell officials said. Francis is now a Dartmouth trustee and chairman and chief executive officer of Publicis and Hal Riney, a leading marketing and advertising company. Panhell Secretary Lauren Kaufman '07 said the speakers in the series will be women who were active in the Dartmouth community, both during and after their college years.

Frats, admin. find balanced relationship

Greek culture at Dartmouth is currently at its most positive juncture of the last 40 years, history professor and Greek alumnus Jere Daniell '55 said Friday night in a speech he gave about the history of Greek life at the College at Sigma Nu fraternity. "Right now there is a great balance between the social units at Dartmouth," Daniell said.

Hanover library opens new wings, art gallery

Former astronaut and Hanover resident Jay Buckey cut the ribbon to open the expanded Howe Library Sunday afternoon, inaugurating new children's and teens' wings, an art gallery and a periodical room at the Hanover public library. Over 1,400 people the Hanover area attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony, which was followed by a reception at the library. Almost 10 years of planning culminated with the Sunday celebration, Marlene McGonigle, director of the Howe Library, said. The library raised $5.5 million through a capital campaign to fund the new addition.
