Band returns payment in response to thefts

|

Following the arrest of two men who traveled to the College with the band RaRaM de NY, the band returned the money the College paid them to perform and sent a letter apologizing that the men, who were not official members of the band, stole laptops and backpacks from Psi Upsilon fraternity. In the letter, the band thanked the College for the opportunity to perform and took responsibility for "letting people that were not trustworthy come to the show." The men arrested last Thursday were not officially affiliated with the band and were friends of the band's road manager, said Max St.

Students face effects of govt. shutdown

Sam Rauschenfels / The Dartmouth Staff As members of Congress debate in negotiation talks to reopen the federal government, Dartmouth students both on-campus and off are beginning to feel the shutdown's detrimental effects. The earth sciences department has been forced to alter its off-campus field program known as "the Stretch," said Carl Renshaw, an earth science professor who leads the national parks segment of the trip. "The closing of the national parks because of the shutdown of the federal government is definitely a case of trying to make lemonade out of lemons," Renshaw said in an email.

Digital Lab offers tech instruction and "Music Video Mondays"

Margaret Rowland / The Dartmouth Senior Staff The Visual Arts Digital Lab, part of both the studio art and film and media studies departments, has been a valuable forum for teaching students how to use popular high-tech programs. The lab, which first opened December 2012 with funding from the Dean's Office and the studio art and film and media studies departments, is located in the large glass-walled room on the first floor of the Black Family Visual Arts Center. The lab holds digital workshops, open hours and special events, head intern Milo Johnson '13 said.

Researchers join cancer consortium

|

Dartmouth-affiliated researchers have joined a new consortium to identify the genetic basis of the five most common types of cancer, including breast, prostate, lung, ovarian and colorectal cancer. The project will involve hundreds of scientists from several different countries, including France, China and Australia, said Christopher Amos, community and family medicine professor and head of Dartmouth's Center for Genomic Medicine and the leader the Genetic Epidemiology of Lung Cancer Consortium. The team of international researchers will use the OncoArray, a customized tool, to genotype 425,000 patient samples.

Women's soccer keeps up momentum with road win over Yale

Dani Wang / The Dartmouth Staff The women's soccer team commanded the field this weekend in New Haven, Conn., against Yale University, taking home another coveted Ivy win after defeating the Bulldogs (5-5-0, 1-2-0 Ivy) 1-0. "I think we came out really strong," co-captain Emma Brush '13 said.
