DHMC prepares for Ebola

|

Ebola preparedness programs are well underway at the College and Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center. Last week, DHMC announced that it would serve as the state’s go-to treatment center if any cases occurred, and Dartmouth launched an Ebola preparedness website that includes a message from Provost Carolyn Dever and executive vice president Rick Mills.

Repairs to golf course close country club

|

Drainage problems and a fairway upgrade caused the Hanover Country Club to end the golf season early, closing Oct. 5 to accommodate multiple renovation projects, said athletics director for facilities and operations Richard Whitmore, who is overseeing construction. The renovations will conclude by late November or early December, before the ground freezes.

The company’s main product will be a DrugFactsBox, a two-page summary of a prescription drug’s effectiveness, benefits and harms based on Food and Drug Administration reports and clinical trial data.

Women’s hockey sets season goals high

|

A 6-2 win against the University of New Hampshire on Sunday meant that the women’s hockey team scored a combined 10 goals in two consecutive games — an accomplishment it did not achieve all of last season.

Student Spotlight: Desmond Fambrini '16

|

Desmond Fambrini ’16 said he realized the significance of the performing arts in his life while he was deciding where to attend college. Having danced for more than a decade, performing with the Oakland chapter of Culture Shock Dance Troupe and participating in various national and international dance competitions, he knew that he wanted to continue to perform and sought a college that fit both his academic and creative needs. Dartmouth was and continues to be this school, he said.


Professors Joy Kenseth and Jim Dorsey, alongside vice provost for academic initiatives Denise Anthony and dean of libraries Jeff Horrell, spoke about open access for faculty work at Monday’s event.

Faculty talk open-access policy

Faculty members met over wine and cheese Monday afternoon to discuss a proposal to make the final pre-published version of faculty-authored scholarly articles available through a public digital repository. This open-access policy mirrors those of around 170 other universities, including Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

New DHMC policy tightens security

|

Enhanced security policies at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center’s Lebanon campus began on Monday, restricting entry and requiring visitor registration during evening and overnight visiting hours. The initiative comes not in response to a particular incident but part of a national trend to increase hospital security, DHMC spokesperson Mike Barwell said.

Bridge to expand to Smith College

The Tuck Business School’s Bridge program, which teaches business fundamentals in a condensed term, will expand to Smith College this summer. The three-week program will be taught by Tuck faculty on Smith’s campus, covering accounting, marketing, leadership and more in a program targeted to women.

Hood receives 118-piece gift from alum

|

The Hood Museum announced Friday that it received a 118-piece donation of art from the children of Barbara and David Stahl ’47. The works, collected over 30 years, include drawings, paintings ceramics and an extensive set of prints ranging from the 16th to the 20th century.

Crew teams compete at Princeton Chase

|

Dartmouth’s three crew teams competed in the three-mile Princeton Chase on Lake Carnegie over the weekend, with the men’s lightweight first varsity eight finishing sixth. After a disappointing outing at the Head of the Charles earlier this month, the women’s first eight rebounded with a better finish, coming in 13th of 50 boats.


Following a two-game win streak that included a 5-4 win over Holy Cross, the field hockey team has now lost two straight.

3-1 loss drops field hockey out of first

The field hockey team lost a crucial league game to Columbia University in its Sunday matchup and fell out of a tie for first place in the Ivy League. The Big Green (5-9, 3-2 Ivy) let up three goals in the first half and failed to equalize in the second despite shutting the Lions (11-4, 4-1 Ivy) out in the final frame.\n Dartmouth dropped to fourth place in the league, behind Columbia, Cornell University and Princeton University, who have 4-1 records in the Ancient Eight. The win extended the Lions’ win streak to five.

Half marathon benefits CHaD

|

Superheroes came out flying on Sunday, or so it appeared as over 3,500 people, many in colorful costumes, participated the Children’s Hospital at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Hero half marathon and Ripcord 5K. As of press time, the hospital had raised more than $697,000.
