From April 13 to 18, the Dartmouth Outing Club hosted its first ever “All Outside” conference, organized by Abigail Johnson ’23, Jessica Chiriboga ’24 and Kate Wasacz ’25 to foster greater equitable and inclusive access to the outdoors. The event lineup included panels, beginner outdoor skill sessions, workshops, an overnight cabin trip, beginner outdoor trips and a culminating dinner at the DOC house.

HackDartmouth hosted its first in-person 24-hour hackathon since 2019, HackDartmouth VII, on April 16 and 17. At the event, students spent the weekend working in groups on digital projects and a series of winners were announced at the end.

On April 7, the College announced a $88 million expansion and renovation of the Hopkins Center for the Arts, with the goal to “enhance opportunities for artistic exploration and growth” in the building. The expansion is part of the College’s $3 billion Call to Lead campaign.

Despite the presence of 339 cases of COVID-19 among Dartmouth community members as of April 12, the College has no plans to reinstate testing or masking requirements “at this time,” according to College spokesperson Diana Lawrence.

This spring, a coalition of vegan students and plant-based allies came together to create Eating for the Earth, a new club intended to advocate for more vegan-friendly options in Dartmouth Dining and raise awareness about plant-based eating. Eating for the Earth gained recognition by the Council on Student Organization during the winter and had their first in-person meeting in March.

For the first time since spring 2019, the fall housing selection process will return to the pre-pandemic room draw system, in which students receive a randomly assigned priority number for choosing housing. Over the last two years, the College has resorted to a system of randomized preference due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite this year’s changes to the housing selection process, some students — especially seniors, who are required to take classes in their final year — are worried about not getting a place to live on campus.

At the start of spring term, about 100 undergraduate students moved into the Summit on Juniper apartment complex, located by Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center, vice president of campus services Josh Keniston said. The complex was originally built for graduate student use next fall, but according to Keniston, undergraduate housing shortages motivated an earlier move-in.

Longtime Collis Cafe employee Donna O’Gara died at home on Monday, April 11, according to an email from College president Phil Hanlon and a Valley News obituary. She was 64 and surrounded by family at the time of her death.

Former United States ambassador to Niger Bisa Williams addressed some 40 students, faculty, alumni and guests in the Haldeman Center on Tuesday afternoon. She discussed the challenges of diplomacy in the 21st century and her career in the U.S. Department of State as a foreign service officer. The talk was titled “Pursuing Peace in Times of War: A Diplomat’s Efforts from Mali to Cuba to the UN.”

On April 27, a repatriation ceremony will take place at the Mohegan Cultural and Preservation Center in Connecticut for the College to return the Samson Occom papers, which include diaries and autobiographical statements belonging to Occom — a co-founder of Dartmouth — to his native Mohegan Tribe.

Dartmouth Forensic Union debaters Tyler Vergho ’23 and Arvind Shankar ’23 won the 76th National Debate Tournament on March 31, ending this year’s hybrid debate season. The victory marks Vergho’s second win in a row and the first back-to-back win in Dartmouth debate history, which began in the 1940s, according to DFU coach John Turner ’03.

Three Dartmouth faculty members — music professor César Alvarez, government professor Brendan Nyhan and philosophy professor Amie Thomasson — were awarded 2022 Guggenheim Fellowships by the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation. According to a press release from the Foundation, 180 fellows from 51 different fields were selected on April 7 from a pool of nearly 2,500 applicants.

This year, April 2 marked the start of Ramadan, the ninth and holiest month of the Islamic calendar. Muslim students on campus have been observing Ramadan together, working closely with Dartmouth Dining Services to accommodate the holiday’s daily fast.

For the first time since 2019, Student Assembly candidates will be able to campaign in person before elections on April 26, according to the Election Planning and Advisory Committee’s updated 2022 election code. The elections will also operate under updated budget requirements and loosened restrictions on social media tactics.

Line@Dartmouth, an app which tracks wait times at dining locations around campus and usage levels of study spots around campus, such as in Baker-Berry Library, was released to the public on the App Store in March. The app currently monitors four dining locations — the Class of 1953 Commons, Collis Cafe, Novack Cafe and Ramekin — as well as second and third floor Berry and Hinman Mail Center.

On March 17, the College announced that Commencement will take place on the Green for the first time since 2019. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, 2020 Commencement proceedings took place online, and in 2021 the celebrations took place at Memorial Stadium with masks.

Throughout April, students admitted to the Class of 2026 will be able to participate in single-day visits to the College as part of this year’s Discover Dartmouth program. The program fills in for the formerly offered Dimensions program, a pre-pandemic event for admitted students that included an overnight stay with a current student.

Eight treadmills at Alumni Gymnasium which broke down due to heavy use throughout the winter term have been repaired. The broken treadmills exacerbated frustration for students, who were already experiencing issues of overcrowding in the winter.

Ice cream will return to Hanover this spring for the first time since the closure of Morano Gelato in 2020 and subsequent Nugget Scoops, with the opening of Hanover Scoops in early May. The new ice cream shop will be managed by Kim and Scott Smith, Upper Valley business owners who own The Ivy Edit in Hanover and multiple businesses, including an ice cream shop, in Woodstock, Vt.
