After a fifth place Ivy League finish last year, this year’s volleyball team looks to draw on new talent, veteran experience and heightened focus to surprise the league with a top-three finish. The road to the podium, however, will not be easy.
Welcome back to campus; hopefully everyone had a refreshing and rewarding summer. After taking the last year off to evaluate my contract with The Dartmouth sports section, I’ve decided to return on a one-year deal to serve as a veteran presence in the locker room. Speaking outside of sports for a moment, part of my reasoning for returning to writing going into graduate study was to keep up with the skill before my time at Dartmouth ends. I spent the summer as an intern in a business role but spent time on the job writing and creating content for that business. Expression is rewarding and something that may go away in my adult life if I’m not diligent about keeping it up.
Women’s rugby
The National Football League Preseason began two weeks ago at the start of August, and in under a month from now, the Chicago Bears will kick off the regular season against the Green Bay Packers to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the NFL. Looking ahead, here are my predictions for each Conference’s Playoff Standings as well as picks for the Super Bowl.
Women’s rowing head coach Wendy Bordeau stepped down this week after 11 nonconsecutive years leading the program and 14 years total with the team. Kelly Harris — the lead assistant coach over the past two years — has been named interim head coach for the upcoming season. The Big Green will conduct a national search for the next permanent head coach who will start in the 2020-21 season.
As part of Dartmouth’s 250th anniversary celebration and college football’s 150th anniversary, the Big Green will face off against the Princeton Tigers on Nov. 9, 2019 at Yankee Stadium. The game is not only an honor for Dartmouth and a boon for publicity on a national level, but also has major implications for the Ivy League crown. The Tigers were undefeated last year and handed Dartmouth its sole loss of the season.
Last Tuesday, Dartmouth announced the hiring of Xander Centenari ’13 as the new men’s tennis head coach. Centenari took over from nine-year coach Chris Drake, who left for Yale University. Centenari had an extremely successful playing career at Dartmouth as a two-time captain before turning professional for four years.
Four Dartmouth rowers will compete in the 2019 World Rowing Under-23 Championship next week in Sarasota, Florida. US Rowing named two lightweights, Cooper Tuckerman ’22 and Max Marchiony ’22, as well as two heavyweights, Mark Levinson ’20 and Daniel Perez ’20, to the 72-person roster to compete from July 24-28.
Dartmouth women’s lacrosse hired Alex Frank earlier this month to be the fifth head coach in team history, replacing Stanford-bound coach Danielle Spencer. Frank spent the past four seasons coaching at the University of Colorado Boulder and served as associate head coach during her final two seasons.
Halfway through the 162-game Major League Baseball season, 13 of the 15 National League teams were within six games of the playoffs as of Thursday morning. Other than the .671 Los Angeles Dodgers who led their division by 12 games, every team in the NL had a winning percentage below .600, with 11 teams between .450 and .540.
Following a highly successful season that saw the women’s lacrosse team claim a share of the Ivy League crown and a berth to the NCAA tournament for the first time in her three-year tenure, head coach Danielle Spencer has departed for the same position at Stanford University.
Women’s rugby is among Dartmouth’s most successful, yet newest, varsity sports. The team played its first varsity game — and earned its first victory — in the fall of 2015 against the University of Pennsylvania. Since then, the team has won three Ivy League titles in four seasons. This past season, the Big Green defeated Harvard University to become National Intercollegiate Rugby Association national champion. The team’s excellence, however, began long before it earned its varsity status.
The Dartmouth women’s rugby team ended its season with a second place finish this Memorial Day weekend in the USA Rugby College 7s National Championship in Tucson, AZ, falling to Lindenwood University in the championship game. It was the team’s best placement to date at the event. The second-place finish came after the team won a national championship title in 15s play in the fall and secured a second-place finish in the Ivy League 7s tournament.
At the end of each academic year, The Dartmouth’s sports section puts up players to be voted upon by the student body as the best of the best. In this year’s The D Sports Awards, five of the top rookies, five of the top female athletes and five of the top male athletes at Dartmouth were pitted against each other. The winners emerged after 481 popular votes were cast by members of the Dartmouth community. The D is happy to announce Emily Henrich, Tanguy Nef and Kierra Sweeney as the winners of this year’s awards.
At the end of each academic year, The Dartmouth’s sports section puts up players to be voted on by the student body as the best of the best. In this year’s The D Sports Awards, five of the top rookies, five of the top female athletes and five of the top male athletes are pitted against each other, the winners to emerge after a popular vote by members of the Dartmouth community. In order to vote, students and community members can click on the link below to cast a single vote before Wednesday, May 22 at 1 p.m. The winners will be announced on Friday, May 24 in that day's issue of The Dartmouth.
The Dartmouth women’s crew team traveled to New Jersey this past weekend for its Ivy League Championship on the Cooper River. In overall team points, the Big Green came in sixth out of eight crews, positioned directly above Cornell University and below the University of Pennsylvania. These results mirror the outcome of the 2018 championships, in which Dartmouth was also wedged in sixth place.
Dartmouth softball star Micah Schroder ’20 was recently awarded Ivy League Player of the Year for her incredible 2019 performance. She is the first Dartmouth player to win the award since Katie McEachern ’16 in 2016. After earning unanimous First-Team, All-Ivy recognition, Schroder was recently named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division I All-Northeast Region First Team.
Pucks in Deep: Erik Karlsson, Brent Burns and the San Jose Sharks
The Dartmouth Rugby Football Club has not been defeated since its Sept. 2018 preseason loss to the United States Military Academy. In that match, the Big Green, a Division I-AA club team, finished just one try behind the DI-A United States Military Academy program. The promise shown by debut players like Jasper Green ’22 and Mike Weir ’22 has developed over successful fall and spring seasons. The Big Green will face Army once again in its initial pool for the Collegiate Rugby Championship at the end of the month.
