On July 11, the United States Third Circuit Court of Appeals affirmed a district court’s decision to reject a request from the National Collegiate Athletics Association to dismiss a landmark case for student athletes. The case, Johnson v. NCAA, asks whether universities should consider student athletes employees — a crucial question in Dartmouth’s dispute over the basketball team unionizing in March.
Varsity golf player Sophie Thai ’26 will compete in the 2024 U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship — an elite national tournament— in Tulsa, Okla., in August. Thai, who has been playing in golf tournaments since she was nine years old, was recruited to Dartmouth from Los Altos High School. After two years on the Dartmouth team, she earned the Championship seat at a qualifying competition in Newton, Mass., on July 16. The Dartmouth sat down with Thai to discuss her recent qualification, playing golf at Dartmouth and how she’s gearing up for the competition.
Dartmouth’s sailing boathouse on Mascoma Lake, the varsity women’s and open sailing teams’ primary facility, is under construction. The project, which will replace the preexisting 70-year-old Allen Boathouse, began this summer and is set to finish in September or October, according to athletics director Mike Harrity.
On July 12, 32 students set out to hike the Dartmouth Outing Club Fifty, a 106-year-old College tradition in which students hike 54 miles from the Moosilauke Ravine Lodge to Robinson Hall. According to summer co-director Kenna Franzblau ’26, 28 of the 32 students completed the hike — and those who finished did so at an unusually fast pace, averaging about 27 hours compared to the typical more than 30.
On July 13, almost 4,000 individuals raced in the Prouty, a fundraiser for the Dartmouth Cancer Center. The event — which is the largest family-friendly fundraising event in New England — raised more than $8,141,000, which will go to research, clinical trials, patient food pantries and other patient services, according to the Prouty website.
Five Dartmouth alumni and one undergraduate student will compete in the Paris 2024 Olympics from July 26 to Aug. 11.
On June 28, the United States Collegiate Ski Coaches Association named John Steel Hagenbuch ’25 the Men’s Nordic National Skier of the Year. This past season, Hagenbuch placed 13th at the World Cup, never lost a collegiate race, won the 7.5K freestyle and placed fifth in the men’s 20K classic at the NCAA Championships, winning All-American honors. The Dartmouth sat down with Hagenbuch to discuss his background in the sport, recent successes and what Dartmouth skiing has meant to him.
On June 23, 12 Dartmouth Club Triathlon Team members and four alumni competed in the Cohasset Triathlon, a sprint triathlon race hosted annually in Cohasset, Mass. Despite the rainy conditions, all 16 Dartmouth participants successfully completed the race, while three finished on the podium in their age groups.
In 2021 — the summer before his senior year at Dartmouth — Massachusetts native Ben Rice ’22 had the opportunity to play for his favorite childhood team, when the New York Yankees drafted him in the 12th round as the 363rd overall pick. Despite missing the 2020 and 2021 College seasons due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Rice had impressed the Pinstripers when he played for the Cotuit Kettleers of the Cape Cod League in 2021. On June 17, Yankees starting first baseman Anthony Rizzo was placed on the 60-day injured list with a fractured radial neck and right arm. With a roster spot open, Rice, who was normally a catcher in the minors, took Rizzo’s position to fill the Yankees’ hole. Rice is currently ranked in the twelve spot in the Yankees’ farm system, which is the highest rank a catcher or infielder can have. The Dartmouth spoke with Rice after he faced the Baltimore Orioles, Atlanta Braves, New York Mets and Toronto Blue Jays.
More than 75% of Dartmouth undergraduates are involved in sports — whether that be varsity, club and intramural teams or physical education programs. It is no surprise, then, that athletic activities are a popular pastime on the Green, especially during Sophomore Summer, when the grass is lush and spirits high.
Felix Rawlinson ’23, a recently graduated member of the men’s heavyweight rowing team, was named a second team Empacher-IRCA All-American for rowing on June 20. In 2023, the British rower was one of five members of the Big Green men’s heavyweight rowing team who competed at the 2023 World Rowing Under 23 Championships in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, competing for Great Britain. Having graduated earlier this month, Rawlinson will next study genomic medicine at Oxford University. The Dartmouth sat down with Rawlinson to discuss his rowing career, proudest achievements and future plans.

On May 18, the College honored late Big Green head football coach Eugene F. “Buddy” Teevens III — the winningest coach in program history — in a celebration of life ceremony at Memorial Field.
On May 18 and 19, the women’s rowing team completed the final races of the season at the annual Ivy League Championship in Pennsauken, N.J. Dartmouth women’s rowing sent six boats to the Championship — three fours and three eights — with the first eight boat qualifying for the grand final and placing sixth overall.
For the first time since 2018, Dartmouth qualified for the Ivy League softball postseason after sweeping the double header against Columbia University on May 4.
Nearly 1,000 students play a varsity sport at Dartmouth, each of them dedicating significant time and energy to their respective sports. Among them lies an even smaller community of 43 athletes who take their talents to two separate sports.

After capturing the Ivy League title on April 21, women’s golf capped off their historic run at the NCAA golf regionals. The Big Green finished 11th out of 12 teams — outperforming their 12-seed ranking — at the Las Vegas tournament from May 6 to 8.
