Last weekend, I returned to Hanover to cheer on the Big Green against Yale and smugly watch the '17s prove their worth as I fondly recalled when my own face was scorched by the flames of the bonfire two years ago. Well, actually, I arrived close to 11 p.m. on Friday (never take the 4:30 p.m. New York coach), in time to watch a few alums wander nostalgically around the dying embers, and, although I pride myself on being one of my few friends to actually enjoy football, I attended the game for a mere twenty minutes.

Hey '17s, we've seen your Facebook struggles and we're here to help. Although it may seem like you have a lot to learn, we're sure you'll catch on in no time. We're looking forward to seeing you on campus for DOC Trips next week, when we're sure you'll meet your best gnomies. Just try not to "live free and die"!

The BEMA got a whole lot more colorful this Saturday as women from various sororities participated in Sigma Delta’s “Sorority Paint Wars.” Inspired by the Color Run, in which runners are doused in different paint different colors after each kilometer, the event invited women to an hour of paint-throwing fun.

With 13X coming to a close, it’s time to start reflecting on what it will mean to return to “real” Dartmouth life. Yes, other students will return and the Hop will reopen as a viable food option, but fall term might pull students back into roommate drama—get ready to move back into a one-room double with that friend you fought with after canceling FoCo dinner plans.

Author Megan Mayhew Bergman gawked at the sight of Sanborn library, exclaiming she wanted to pinch herself before beginning a reading of a recent short storyThursdayafternoon. Students, faculty and community members listened attentively as Bergman shared the story of a female heiress, Joe, who purchased an island after getting PTSD driving ambulances during World War I.

Beer Goddess, Rosy Eagle, Junco, Chicory and Crunk, thru-hikers passing through Hanover on the Appalachian Trail, said hikers develop a unique culture during their four to eight months on the route, endlessly discussing ramen and trading stories on the origins of their trail names.

It's no use trying to write about only one of these apartments. To the women subletting them this summer, they're virtually interchangeable. Just inside their shared front door, everyone's sandals and sneakers are piled in heaps, leaving visitors to pick their way across.

Far too often I hear students complain about the lack of social alternatives to the Greek scene — only to not bother taking advantage of the events that are offered. Programming Board’s Fieldstock concert in the Kemeny courtyard Saturday night was a prime example of a fun, sober summer evening that not nearly enough students attended.

When Sarner Underground first opened in the fall of 2012, it was advertised as an alternative social space. Located in the basement of the Class of 1953 Commons, Sarner is comprised of two large event spaces, two lounges and a meeting room.

The other day I was walking with a friend past the College-designated swimming docks towards the Ledyard Canoe Club, when the lifeguard on duty called out to us, having spotted the towels tucked beneath our arms and the bikini ties poking out the back of our tank tops.

Ah, sophomore summer – what better time to head into the wilderness for a night or two with friends? Good thing we go to college in the middle of nowhere and have access not only to the Upper Valley wilderness, but also to numerous cabins to enjoy it.

Although Dartmouth students are doubtless familiar with other types of basements and tables, many remain unfamiliar with the 8-Ball Hall Game Room, the newest addition to the scene. From students waiting for a meal to those looking for alternative evening plans, 8-Ball Hall offers entertainment and open spaces for anyone who stops by.

There’s only one thing scarier than the fact that 13X is nearing its final weeks: formal season is almost upon us. While there is still a solid amount of time before desperation kicks into gear, consider making some moves now so you’re not stuck asking your lab partner’s housemate’s trippee — that’s an awkward blitz. To impress that special someone, you’ll have to go beyond the simple Foco dinner date. Before we get too bogged down with finals to care about our love lives, use one of these date ideas for inspiration.

We’ve hit August and you still haven’t ventured outside of Hanover? Don’t fret — there are still plenty of fun New England summertime activities in the Upper Valley left to distract you from ever-approaching finals and the unfortunate reality of fall term.

If you’re on campus right now, there’s a good chance you’re procrastinating studying for tonight’s astronomy midterm. Or your roommate is. Or your best friend. Probably all of you. Astronomy professor Robert Fesen wields power over the summer GPAs of 229 students on campus. And no, he doesn’t mind that you’re only in it for the SCI or SLA credit. In fact, he prefers it that way. It was the one of the first things he asked me.
