It’s almost Winter Carnival! I would have written this column for next week, but Carnival will have been going on for two-and-a-half days by that time, so here we are. Also, I couldn’t think of anything else to write about. Midterms week is hard, guys.

I haven’t eaten a meal on the light side of FoCo in at least four terms. Does that make me a biased reporter, or does that make me a reasonable human being? I mean seriously, who has the time to do their makeup well enough for the glaring brightness of the light side? Or why sit on those flimsy black plastic chairs when you could opt for the lone-pine-crested wooden masterpieces on the dark side?

Felt special at 6:52 p.m. today? So did the rest of us, when a Sphinx imposter sent out this blitz.

Trips to the library start with the best intentions. I usually saunter into Baker-Berry with a well-thought out plan to finish all my reading for the week, outline that gov. paper and finish all of my FSP apps multiple weeks in advance. Realistically though, most of my library excursions end up looking a little more like this:

UPDATE: My coat has been found. My fracket is once again in my possession, albeit with a few new stains that I briefly wondered about and then ignored. Have I washed it yet? Nope. Will I wash it soon? Probably not until (unless?) somebody boots on it. Which brings us to this week’s question to ponder: Dartmouth is a super gross school. Why do none of us care?

Recruiting season has finally arrived! For the dozens of you who will spend the next two weeks in panic mode trying to secure a summer job, we created a few practice case interviews to test your reasoning skills.

I was in FoCo for lunch the other day and noticed that the bakery was offering lemon cake, one of my all-time favorite desserts. I have a policy where I try not to eat FoCo desserts during lunch (soft-serve being the one exception), so I made a mental note to try the cake at dinner that night. For some reason, I didn’t end up eating dessert after dinner, let alone check the bakery for my lemon cake! I thought I had missed the one chance I had. But the next night, I saw lemon bars in the desserts section and it dawned on me — I can make my own lemon cake! Or at least try to…

With over 4,400 students on campus, it’s not surprising that we see many familiar faces at our activities and classes. You may not be able to help that the ’16 whose trip you led now holds an arguably higher position than you in your sorority, or that the guy you awkwardly spilled chili on at Collis is in your Econ class. Some overlaps, however, seem even less predictable — like my undergraduate dean teaching my spinning PE class.

This Winter Carnival, hit book series and television show Game of Thrones will come to life on campus for the Carnival of Thrones-themed weekend. Construction has already begun on the snow sculpture that is built in the center of the Green every year, a highlight of many students’ Carnival experience. Reporter Irene Cofie ’16 asked students for their predictions on what they expect from this year’s snow sculpture.

First things first. If you are the soulless thief who took my red Columbia ski jacket from SAE last Friday, give it back! Not only does it have my name all over it, so you will never be able to wear it again without me attacking you, I hid it in a closet … so you clearly exerted some real effort in finding it instead of taking one of the dozens of coats all over the floor. No, it didn’t have my passport/driver’s license/family heirlooms/iPad in it or cost thousands of dollars (looking at you, ’17 girls who blitzed out this week), but I am cold and I would like my fracket back — please and thank you.

Winter’s here, and with below-zero temps and hidden ice patches everywhere, it feels a bit like it’s out to get you.

Welcome back, Dartmouth! To my column, that is. That's right, everybody — come one, come all, because Stuff Dartmouth Kids Like is back! (For all the '17s who don't know, this column is the best thing since the Drunkest Girls at the Party briefly blacked in each week to grace The Mirror with their words. I'm not explaining that one, look it up.) Promptly after strongarming the new Dartbeat editors into giving me precious column inches (just kidding, the Internet is infinite in this and all other moments), I sat down and penned all 20 of my columns, give or take, for the rest of my time here at Dartmouth.

Of the four seasons we experience at Dartmouth, winter term is undeniably the grimmest – temperatures drop to scary subzero figures, half the student body flees off campus to warmer locations, and it’s nearly impossible to brave the outdoors without putting on at least three extra layers. Last year, rather than taking complete refuge indoors, I decided to embrace the weather by signing up for a particularly exciting sounding winter PE class – “Downhill Ski – Beginner.”
