“Lest the Old Traditions Fail” — the famous line from the Dartmouth Alma Mater, “Dear Old Dartmouth” — has been thrown around often in the last few weeks as the future of the Homecoming bonfire tradition lies at stake.
With every new revelation in this year’s “Bonfire-Gate,” it’s become clearer and clearer that Dartmouth is in need of some new homecoming traditions. Regardless of this year’s bonfire (or lack thereof), it is this writer’s humble opinion that humans should be afraid of fire. So for those who, like me, would rather live to see the day after homecoming, here are some alternative traditions: since our ancestors didn’t evolve instincts just for us to run back into the flames.

Despite being here for three years now, the first and only time I have participated in making the Homecoming Bonfire was this past weekend, when the 2017 Class Council hosted a brunch for the senior class so we could all sign the Class of 2017 board. By the time I arrived — after taking advantage of having no classes on Friday and sleeping in — a sizeable crowd had already come and gone in Collis Common Ground. But as I signed my name, I noticed that my signature only added to maybe 30 or so others.
