The Washington Capitals have signed hockey goaltender Clay Stevenson ’24 to a two-year entry-level contract beginning next year, the team announced on March 28. In the meantime, Stevenson will finish the spring term remotely to travel to Pennsylvania and play for the team’s American Hockey League affiliate Hershey Bears on an amateur tryout agreement until his contract takes effect.

Over spring break, the baseball team traveled to Aurendale, Fla. to play eight games in eight days at the RussMatt Invitational at Lake Myrtle Park. Things got off to a rocky start with losses in the first four games, but the Big Green rallied to close out the trip on a four-game winning streak.
Over spring break, Dartmouth’s softball team headed south for its season opener with a doubleheader at Georgia State University on March 17. After losing 9-0 and then 6-0 in the two games, the Big Green competed in the University of Georgia Classic on March 19 and 20. On the first day, Dartmouth fell to No. 16 Georgia 11-2 and to Mercer University 10-2. The following day, Dartmouth suffered another loss to the University of Illinois 9-1 but got revenge on Mercer, winning the second game of the weekend against the team 5-0.
Men’s basketball
Appointed interim athletics director in February 2021, Peter Roby ’79 has navigated the fallout of the elimination and eventual reinstatement of five varsity athletic teams, the subsequent retirement of former athletics director Harry Sheehy and a year full of COVID-19 cancellations and restrictions. Roby sat down with The Dartmouth to discuss the challenges and accomplishments of his first year in the athletics department.
After a two year hiatus from the ice caused by COVID-19, the men’s club hockey team is right back where they left off in March of 2020: heading to nationals. The team will take its undefeated record to St. Louis, Missouri from March 10–15 to compete against other top American Club Hockey Association teams like the University of New Mexico and Grand Valley State University, the latter of which was the national runner-up in 2019 and is ranked second coming into the tournament. The Big Green hasn’t lost a game in the past three years and will enter the tournament ranked 10th in the Division III pool of the tournament.
The men’s hockey team played a best-of-three series this weekend against sixth-seeded Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in the first round of the ECAC Tournament. Dartmouth won the first game of the series, but lost back-to-back heartbreakers on Saturday and Sunday to end the season for the Big Green.
On Saturday, Dartmouth’s men’s basketball team took on the University of Pennsylvania for its senior night at home in the Big Green’s penultimate game of the season. Heading into the game, Dartmouth needed to win in order to keep its hopes of an Ivy League tournament berth alive. The Big Green did just that, defeating Penn 84-70. However, Princeton University’s win over Harvard University on Sunday erased Dartmouth’s chances of making the Ivy League tournament.
Men’s basketball
This past weekend, Dartmouth’s track and field teams competed in the Ivy League Heptagonal Championships at The Armory Track in New York City, hosted by Columbia University. The men’s and women’s teams both finished in seventh place with 36 and 43 points, respectively.
The men’s hockey team capped off their regular season this weekend with a road trip to New York to face off against Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and Union College. Dartmouth was unable to skate away with a victory in either matchup, losing a third period lead to RPI and falling in overtime to Union.
The Dartmouth women’s swimming and diving team attended the Ivy League Championship Feb. 16-19 at Harvard University’s Blodgett Pool in Cambridge, Mass. After four days of competition, the team finished in seventh place in what was the end of nine Big Green seniors’ Ivy League careers.
Men's basketball
This weekend, the Dartmouth’s men’s basketball team hosted Cornell University and Columbia University in the final matchup of both season series. After suffering a historic 85-40 road loss to Princeton University last week — the worst loss Dartmouth has sustained against an Ivy League team in 55 years — the Big Green regrouped and took down Cornell 71-59. The following day, the Big Green took down Columbia 79-50. Dartmouth’s wins bring the team to a 4-7 Ivy League record and move it up to sixth in the Ivy League standings.
This week, the men’s hockey team played three games, two against Princeton University — one home and one away — and one against No. 4 Quinnipiac University. The Big Green took care of business against Princeton, completing a season sweep, but fell to Quinnipiac for the second time this year.
This past weekend, the Dartmouth women's basketball team came out victorious on Friday against Cornell University, but fell short the next day to Columbia University. The win against Cornell marked the Big Green’s third win of the season, with Dartmouth pulling ahead in overtime to secure a 67-64 win. Allie Harland ’23 scored a career-high 15 points and also contributed two free throws in overtime. Mekkena Boyd ’24 made the game-winning layup.
The NFL tried to prolong the 2021 season for as long as it could, but the inevitable has finally happened: the greatest football season I’ve experienced as a fan is over. It finished with a storybook ending for the approximately 360 people that make up the Los Angeles Rams: 53 players, 21 coaches, 276 employees and 10 fans.
It’s been a big week for Dartmouth skiing near and far, as Dartmouth held the historic Dartmouth Carnival for the first time in three years and seven current and former Big Green skiers are representing the College in Beijing at the 2022 Winter Olympics.
