After nearly three years of COVID-19 restrictions, fall sports teams have returned back to normal with pre-COVID-19 traditions reinstated. Among other teams, women’s and men’s cross country, volleyball and rugby all had successful fall seasons this year.

Women’s rowing finished 11th out of 14 crews in the Championship fours and 26th out of 29 crews in the Championship Eights. Although men’s lightweight rowing had notable success in the singles and doubles competition, Dartmouth placed 14th out of 16 in the Lightweight 4+ and 10th out of 15 in the Lightweight 8+. Despite fierce competition, heavyweight rowing saw the most potential in their A entry of Championship Eights raced a time of 13:45.806, placing ninth out of 25 crews. The heavies’ Championship Eights B entry were behind at 14:02.953, finishing 15th.

Despite being the team to blemish Princeton University’s 7-0 record in 2021 and at Yankee Stadium in 2020, Dartmouth could not complete the Tiger three-peat this year, leaving New Jersey with a narrow three-point loss to the Ivy League’s top dog. Three of Dartmouth’s four conference losses have been one-score defeats, but this one — a chance to play spoiler against an old-time rival — was arguably its most disappointing.

This weekend, the men and women’s cross country teams placed fourth and fifth, respectively, at the 2022 Ivy League Heptagonal Championship on Friday morning at Van Cortlandt Park in Bronx, New York. Each team took 12 traveling members, with the men’s team running in the 8k race and the women’s team in the 6k race.

In a battle that was closer than the final score indicated on Saturday, Harvard University defeated Dartmouth 28-13, putting a damper on the Big Green’s Homecoming weekend. Beneath sunny skies and a stadium packed with 8,735 fans, the Big Green kept it close early on — scoring both of its touchdowns in the second quarter before failing to score again.

This weekend, the volleyball team hit the road to continue Ivy League play, facing the University of Pennsylvania followed by Princeton University. Coming off a 3-0 home win against Harvard University, the team swept Penn before losing to Princeton 3-0.

Men’s hockey captured wins in both of its preseason matches against McGill University and the University of Guelph on Oct. 12 and Oct. 21. The Big Green hopes to continue this momentum and preparation into the regular season, which begins this week.

In its matchup against Columbia on Saturday, football finally found itself on the better end of a one-score game, defeating the Lions 24-21 to end its four-game losing streak. Despite losing its 21-9 lead, the Big Green rallied and claimed the victory thanks to Ryan Bloch’s ’23 game-winning field goal with four seconds left in the game.

On Saturday, the Big Green rugby team traveled to Cambridge, Massachusetts to play its first game of the season against Ivy League opponent Harvard University. Both Dartmouth and Harvard entered the contest undefeated with 4-0 records. The Big Green fell behind early, entering the second half down 5-19, but was able to rally for a 31-29 victory after a try in the closing seconds of the game.

Following a six-game losing streak, Big Green field hockey fell 4-3 to the University of Massachusetts Lowell on Oct. 16. Dartmouth now stands 3-10 overall and 0-4 in the Ivy League.

On Saturday, the men’s and women’s cross country teams competed in the Panorama Farms XC23 Invitational at the University of Virginia. The nine traveling members of the men’s team and 10 traveling members of the women’s team competed in the 8km and 5km races, respectively.

In this year’s rendition of the Granite Bowl, Dartmouth fell 14-0 to the University of New Hampshire, extending its losing streak to four games and dropping its record to 1-4. The game was more lopsided than the score alone indicates, with the Wildcats possessing the ball for nearly twice as long as Dartmouth, while the Big Green was held to 198 offensive yards – the team’s lowest output in 11 years.
