Though Main Street is situated right across from the College, it often feels like its own little world, bustling with restaurants like Molly’s and shopping destinations like Still North Books and Bar, J-Crew and Lemon Tree Gifts. To many students, the shops and restaurants of Main Street provide an escape from campus life. For those students who work at businesses in town or throughout the Upper Valley, the local area offers a new working environment.

College students are notoriously stereotyped as late risers, and Dartmouth is certainly not the exception. Many of us are quick to complain about our dreaded 9Ls, the class period which begins at 8:50 a.m. Some even bemoan our 10s (10:10 a.m.) and 11s (11:30 a.m.).

As the fall term dawns on us, seniors are entering their final year on campus as members of the Class of 2025. During their time at Dartmouth, they’ve taken seminars, labs and lectures, exploring Dartmouth through a multitude of departments. Beyond the classroom, they’ve completed sophomore summer, enjoyed off-terms and traveled abroad. So what does their last year look like? In many cases, seniors choose to showcase their academic growth by devoting their last year to completing a thesis — a culminating experience tailored to their major.

This summer, the College declined to hire University of Illinois Chicago criminology, law and justice professor Nicole Nguyen as a tenured geography professor, despite unanimous support from the department, according to an email statement from Nguyen. The decision sparked controversy among academics and students at institutions worldwide.

Two Dartmouth buildings — the Irving Institute for Energy and Society and Anonymous Hall — received Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Certifications by the United States Green Building Council, Dartmouth News announced on Aug. 22. The Irving Institute earned a LEED Platinum certification, while Anonymous Hall earned a LEED Gold certification.

Nicole Chambers, the former office manager of The Dartmouth, was sentenced today to 15 months in prison and three years of supervised release — the maximum sentence under her plea agreement — for embezzling more than $223,000 from the student newspaper between April 2017 and September 2021. Chief Judge Landya McCafferty delivered the sentence in federal court in Concord, N.H.

On Aug. 21, Service Employees International Union, Local 560 — the union representing the men’s basketball team — filed an unfair labor practice charge against the College for refusing to bargain in good faith with the men’s basketball team union, according to an SEIU, Local 560, press release.
