It’s finally fall, and you’re finally here, at the college of your dreams. You’re peppy and excited and ready to #thrive — but it turns out things are a little bit harder than you think. Dartmouth is a whole new world! As a result, sometimes you’re lonely, and your first care package from home made you cry, and your classes are actually kind of hard. You, the valedictorian at your old high school, are actually struggs to func, and it’s making you re-evaluate everything.
As an incoming college student, you may be excited for various parts of college life: meeting new friends, taking intellectually stimulating courses and, maybe, venturing out to a party at a Greek house for the first time. The journey to your first party might be full of questions: What do I wear? How much should I drink? Which Instagram do I post so that my high school friends know that I’m enjoying college and maximum fun is being achieved? Unfortunately for you, Dartmouth first-years do not indulge in the excitements (and anxieties) that come along with Greek spaces until the six-week ban is up. While sliding through home friends’ Snapchat stories and scouring campus for something to do on a Friday night, Saturday night or Wednesday night, you might feel a little defeated and as if there is nothing “fun” to do on campus. But don’t worry — to find your entertainment during the frat ban, use this as your guide to the social spaces that will make the ban more bearable and make the first six weeks of college really feel like ~college~.
I walk to the Life Sciences Center every day (because I am a poor planner) and would like to think I’m pretty familiar with the trek. But this year I noticed something different — recently, someone has installed a giant speaker playing soothing, yet baffling, water noises and mating whale noises on the outside of the building. So, as a serious Dartbeat investigator, I decided to look into this latest Dartmouth foolishness.
Have you ever wondered what your First-Year Trip would have been like (or what it will be like) if you were assigned a trip based on your zodiac sign? Maybe you hoped to experience something more suited to your personality. Or maybe being forced out of your comfort zone is what made (or will make) your trip so unforgettable. Well, regardless of how your trip went, here’s what your horoscope says about which trip you should have done:
It’s been a wild ride with Dartbeat these past 4 years, watching it evolve slowly but surely. I have forced people to tell me their secrets, and admitted things over the internet that I maybe shouldn’t have. But here we are, week 10, and it’s time for my final article. And, since it’s Dartbeat, it only feels right to write it in list form.
Foliage season is here, in case you haven’t noticed the millions of leaf pictures on social media or looked out a window. But have you ever stopped to think about why the leaves change color in the fall? Hint: It’s not for the Instagram likes. Dartbeat sat down with Biological Sciences professor Matthew Ayres to answer this question and more.
Well, I’m finally a Dartmouth senior, and my younger brother is finally a freshman (at Princeton though, ew). Talking to him made me realize just how much a person can change during their first three years of college. Leading up to his first day, he claimed that he would never drink coffee. I naively said the same when I entered my freshman year—but then I discovered KAF. Here’s my take on just how different freshmen and seniors really are.
Do you enjoy reading and writing humor? Are you tuned in to campus events? Do you have a talent for finding the perfect GIF for any situation? If so, Dartbeat is the place for you!
When Dartmouth decided to renovate Baker Tower, I doubt anyone considered the enormous problem it would cause: depriving us of a backdrop for those classic “I’m back!” or “Look, it’s autumn!” profile pictures. Without a photo of me at the one place that’s recognizably-Dartmouth, how am I supposed to subliminally let everyone back home know that I haven’t flunked out yet? Could there possibly be an alternative to the coveted shot in front of Baker Tower? Probably not. But, unless you’re up for posing in front of the library as it stands now and captioning the photo, “Yup, this actually is Dartmouth,” you’re going to have to look elsewhere.
