A former member of the Dartmouth men’s lacrosse team, David Gallagher ’20 — known as “DG” by his teammates — left a profound impression on his team and beyond with his constant smile, optimism and selflessness. Those who knew Gallagher remember him for his kindness, his athletic ability and his happiness.
On Sept. 30, the College published its Annual Fire and Safety Report, also known as the Clery Report, which details campus crime statistics from 2021 — and also includes data from 2019 and 2020. The report, which is mandated by the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act of 1990, found increases in crimes such as liquor law violations, burglary and rape between 2020 and 2021. Joshua Watson ’22 died on Aug. 27 in his hometown of Indianapolis, according to a Wednesday email to campus from interim Dean of the College Scott Brown and an online obituary.
At approximately 10:45 p.m. on Saturday evening, an older, white man physically attacked biochemistry Ph.D. candidate Abubakar Khan after having directed racial epithets towards Khan and three other graduate students. Following the incident, the Hanover Police department submitted an alleged hate crime for review to the New Hampshire Department of Justice.
A graduate student was physically assaulted on Saturday night near the intersection of Main Street and Wheelock Street, according to a “Timely Warning” message from Safety and Security director Keysi Montás on Monday afternoon. The student sustained no physical injuries.

On Aug. 8, College President Phil Hanlon visited the White House to discuss reproductive rights with Vice President Kamala Harris and seven other higher education presidents, according to a White House press release. The roundtable discussion followed the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade in June, eliminating the constitutional right to abortion.

This weekend, members of the Class of 2020 will return to campus for a belated commencement ceremony, allowing them an in-person opportunity to celebrate after graduating virtually two years ago. The event was initially rescheduled to June 2021, but the College postponed festivities again due to COVID-19 concerns, according to vice president for alumni relations Cheryl Bascomb ’82.
