Hey '14s — what stories on The D's website were the most click-worthy since you matriculated? We scoured the analytics and found a few highlights. There are the expected (#lohsepocolypse) and the random (apparently we all deeply care about what our birth order says about us), the tragedies of the past year and the national news scandals.Take a look at the top 14 stories below.
1.Lohse: Telling the Truth(Jan. 25, 2012): 77,878 views. Andrew Lohse '12 opened his column calling hazing in Greek houses a "public health crisis of the utmost importance." He then spills the details, chock full of kiddie pools, vomlets and vinegar. He called for a residential college system, a coed Greek scene and "basic human decency." Janet Reitman called, and the rest is history.
2.Steinberg '15 remembered for positive, inclusive nature(March 12, 2014): 46,753 views. Dartmouth mourned Blaine Steinberg '15 deeply after she suddenly passed away following a heart attack in early March. The 20-year-old loved athletics and devoted herself to her friends and family.
3.A Phi, Phi Delt cancel 'Phiesta' (April 25, 2014): 46,655 views. Two Greek houses canceled an annual philanthropic event after students expressed concern that the theme was possibly culturally insensitive. To Phi Delta Alpha fraternity president Taylor Cathcart '15, "the possibility of offending even one member of the Dartmouth community was not worth the potential benefits of having the fundraiser." Phi Delt and Alpha Phi sorority raised over $10,000 for heart health online after the cancelation went viral, sparking commentary on political websites, Reddit and, of course, around campus.
4.Student dies on Barcelona trip(Jan. 9, 2012): 36,074 views. Crispin Scott '13 was studying abroad in Barcelona when he was killed, and landlord Oscar Vicente Castro Cadeno was arrested on homicide charges after police searched his home in a municipality of Barcelona. Scott is remembered for his intelligence, humility and upbeat disposition.
5.Reich '68 critiques U.S. debt deal(Aug. 5, 2011): 33,405 views. Robert Reich '68, the former U.S. Labor Secretary, spoke in Moore Theater late in 11X. He said the U.S. is in a "vicious cycle" of depressed consumer demand and unemployment, saying the true problems in the economy are job lags, wages and economic growth, not the national debt.
6.Classes canceled tomorrow in response to protest aftermath(April 23, 2013): 28,263 views. When death threats followed a protest of the annual Dimensions song-and-dance show, then-Interim President Carol Folt and Dean of the Faculty Michael Mastanduno cancelled classes, replacing them with a day of programming and reflection.
7.All Night Rage: Adderall as a party drug(Feb. 2, 2007): 27,547 views. Published well before you fist-bumped JYK at matriculation, recreational use of Adderall remained a salient issue well into your years at the College.
8.Author of online post identified as member of Class of 2017(Feb. 12, 2014): 24,049 views. The chilling first sentences of a post targeting a female '17 — that identified her by name and residence hall, providing a step-by-step guide about how to rape her — led into a horrifying backstory, calling attention to the world of anonymous web forums.
9.Only Child Syndrome(Oct. 12, 2012): 19,491 views. A telling quote: "One of my conclusions, unsupported by any scientific evidence, is that only children, including those at Dartmouth, tend to think very highly of themselves." We're confused, too.
10.Kessner '12 remembered for his energy and love of music(Aug. 22, 2013): 19,134 views.Jonny Kessner '12 died late last summer after a traumatic brain injury at 23 years old. His friends and family remembered Kessner, a visible campus presence, for his passion for music and his ever-present cheer.
11.Students protest annual dimensions show(April 20, 2013): 18,987 views. Chanting "Dartmouth has a problem," a group of students burst into the Class of 1953 Commons…you know the rest.
12.Aurora's guide to eating out(Oct. 5, 2007): 18,489 views. Hint: It's not about how to navigate FoCo to-go. Yes, we published this, and yes, it’s remained very popular years after publication.
13.Malcolm Freberg '09 competes on this season of 'Survivor'(Sept. 19, 2012): 18,000 views. Freberg was a frontrunner for most of the season, voted out because he was too big of a threat.
14.Student accuses frat of hazing violations(Jan. 25, 2012): 17,515 views. A he-said-she-said of administrators and Lohse and Hanover Police — The Dartmouth navigated Lohse's allegations in a news story accompanying the opinion piece.
