CORNELL: A Cornell University student was reported missing last Wednesday after canoeing unaccompanied on Cayuga Lake, according to the Cornell Daily Sun. Christopher Dennis, a member of Cornell’s Class of 2013, had been camping with friends near Taughannock State Park, and left the campsite to canoe alone around 5 a.m. last Wednesday. Dennis’ friends later found his canoe overturned in Cayuga Lake. A search effort by Seneca County officials and Cornell students is ongoing as of press time.
HARVARD: Harvard University’s Nieman Foundation of Journalism recently named 24 journalists as Nieman Fellows for the 2013-2014 year, according to The Crimson. The fellows, 12 of whom are from countries other than the U.S., will take leaves from their careers to engage in courses, seminars and research for 10 months at Harvard. The Nieman Foundation selected the Fellows from 272 applicants from across the globe.
PRINCETON: Princeton University women’s openweight crew team won the title at the 2013 Ivy League Championships last weekend, the Daily Princetonian reported. The team completed the race at a 6:29.96 mark, well ahead of second-place Yale at 6:36.86. The victory marks the second Ivy title Princeton’s team has won in the last three years, after coming in third to Harvard and Cornell at the Ivy Sprints last year.
UPENN: A group of international students at the University of Pennsylvania expressed disappointment about remarks made by Vice President of the United States Joe Biden at his commencement address last week, according to the Daily Pennsylvanian. Biden made political remarks with reference to China in his speech, describing the country as “a nation where you cannot breathe free.” A group of Penn students, many of whom are Chinese, circulated a petition soliciting an apology from Biden subsequent to the address. Chinese international students represent about 5 percent of the University’s total undergraduate and graduate student population, according to Penn’s Office of Institutional Research and Analysis.
YALE: Yale University held its 312th commencement ceremony last Monday, the Yale Daily News reported. University President Richard Levin awarded 3,084 degrees and 262 provisional degrees at the ceremony. Diploma ceremonies for individual schools were held subsequently to the overall Commencement ceremony. Students personalized and decorated their graduation caps based on the schools from which they graduated.
