Students express mixed feelings about new Collis

With renovations being done on the cafe at the Collis Center for Student Involvement to improve its original outdated layout, students have mixed feelings on the new, temporary dining area that has taken over Collis 101 and Collis Common Ground.

The new Collis is better for seating and for the ability to move around, but [I’d] probably [prefer] the old Collis for variety. I miss the omelets. I haven’t had a problem fighting people to get anywhere and before people were throwing elbows and stuff. I think [now] people know what the lines are for. Before, people would just stand around and they wouldn’t really know whether they were in the sandwich line or the omelet line. I don’t know if the layout has improved, but it’s definitely more spacious, except for the awkwardly large tables that you have to communally sit at. —Sarah Morse ’15

The seating area is nice as it is a lot more open, although the food is a definite downgrade. They did the best with what they could. I mainly go to Collis for the pasta so I go there less, because the pasta is subpar. —David Wylie ’15

I think it’s nice that there is space but the pasta sucks because its cold and you can’t mix in vegetables. —Chase Schoelkopf ’15

I like the seating area better and I think it’s really nice. I don’t like the food, especially because the stir-fry is premade. I think it’s a lot less crowded so that’s easier but it still gets pretty crowded during rush hour. I was pleasantly surprised. I thought it would be horrible. I still frequent Collis more this term because I changed meal plans. Collis is definitely my favorite dining option because it has a good variety of food and is a very communal area. —Sarah Heyborne ’16

I actually kind of like the seating. I like how it’s all in one area. I wish we could still have pasta — and I liked the omelets before as well — but everything else is pretty much the same. It’s not really spatially better. I haven’t been there when the lines are really long but I can imagine it’s still just as crowded. I think the seating has improved but I don’t think the food has quite yet. —Karampreet Kaur ’15

So the general consensus? The seating is great and the overall layout is better, but the food itself could definitely use some work.
