Study in an unconventional spot
Depending on the classes you signed up for or how much you care about them you may or may not have discovered that massive complex of buildings north of the green called Baker Berry library. Offering a diversity of study spaces from quiet to social, from gloomy to sterile, from Hogwarts (think Tower Room) to King Arthur, there likely is something for everyone. Unfortunately, the library can get old, and--come finals--can also get really crowded. Fortunately, there are more places to study outside the library.
2) Morrison Commons in Rocky – one of the few places you can study in solitude without suffering from claustrophobia. Going in on a weekend or at night will almost ensure that you will be the only one in there. Lots of table space, noise level varies, bonus points for proximity if you live in Russell Sage.
3) The top floor of Foco – probably my favorite secret study space. Ample table space, accompanied with plenty of natural lighting and unlimited food makes it a great midday study location. Last time I checked, they don’t kick you out between lunch and dinner times—meaning you can swipe in for lunch and stay for the rest of the afternoon! I also think they keep the cookies out during this interim period, but don’t hold me to it.
4) Collis – often overlooked as a study space because its reputation as a social space prevails, Collis has a number of study space options. The dining room during the weekend, the upstairs meeting rooms and hallway spaces, Collis Commonground, and One Wheelock all offer different environments, and the best food on campus (personal bias here) is usually just a few steps away.
5) Dirt Cowboy – just barely off campus, what Dirt Cowboy lacks in broad table space they make up for in beverage options. The atmosphere can be a bit busy, but some people thrive in it.
6) Umpleby’s – truly off campus, Umpleby’s has plenty of table space, good lighting, and delicious sandwiches.
7) Feldberg Library – while technically a library, Feldberg is often overlooked in the hunt for study spaces. River Cluster residents: take note of its location, just feet away from your dorm!
Hopefully, these suggestions will inspire you to venture off the well-beaten path of 3FB. Happy studying!
