Update Appended (May 27, 1:17 p.m.): This article has been updated to explicitly reflect that the Hanover Police Department determined Lloyd was the driver during their investigation at the scene of the accident.
On the night of May 23, Hanover Police arrested Alice Lloyd ’27 for driving under the influence after responding to a report of “a crash involving a Jeep Wrangler into the front entrance of Kappa Kappa Gamma” sorority’s house at 24 East Wheelock Street, department captain Michael Schibuola wrote yesterday in an email statement to The Dartmouth. The accident left visible damage to the house’s accessibility ramp, which leads to the main entrance.
There is dispute about the identity of the driver of the vehicle. In a phone call today with The Dartmouth, Schibuola said the department charged Lloyd based on its investigation on the scene.
“We conducted an investigation, and we determined through witness interviews and some statements and some other evidence on scene that she [Lloyd] was the one that was driving,” Schibuola said.
Lloyd, however, wrote in a message to members of Kappa — of which she is the president — that she was not the driver. Her message was obtained and reviewed by The Dartmouth.
“My car did crash into the porch, as means to steer away from oncoming traffic. With the tragic factor of it being my friend’s first time driving in the U.S. and on the other side of the road,” she wrote. “Certainly, I am shaken up and still quite traumatized. But I am relieved to report both the driver and I are safe, with no one else in the crash.”
Schibuola added that HPD is “aware that she [Lloyd] is denying” being the driver.
A spokesperson for the College, a spokesperson for the Department of Safety and Security and several other members of the sorority’s executive board declined to comment.
This is a developing story and will be updated.
