Letter to the Editor: President Beilock, Stop Acquiescing

Andrea Greer ’93 argues that College President Beilock must stand up and take symbolic action to defend rights in the face of the Trump administration’s attacks.

Re: Dartmouth only Ivy to abstain from signing letter against Trump administration funding cuts

How shameful that Dartmouth is the only Ivy League school that has not signed the American Association of Colleges and Universities’ letter condemning Trump’s actions.

The explanation that the President Beilock doesn’t feel open letters are effective rings hollow when coupled with the hiring of the former chief counsel of the Republican National Committee to serve as the school’s general counsel. These actions taken together look an awful lot like appeasement and acquiescence.

Pursue lawsuits against the Trump administration and other measures, but take symbolic action as well — and don’t be afraid to shout. At a time when there are those who cannot speak up for their own rights, let us be a vox clamantis pro aliis alongside our peer institutions.
