After falling in Providence to Brown University, Dartmouth baseball is tied with Cornell for fifth in the Ivy League. Brown remains last in the conference with a 3-9 record, even after taking two out of three games from the Big Green.
Dartmouth baseball started a tough week of games last Wednesday, falling to Boston College in a 12-2 loss that was cut short due to the run limit. Dartmouth’s offense struggled early, with their first hit coming in the bottom of sixth off the bat of Luke Carroll ’25. The Big Green rotated through five pitchers in just eight innings, struggling to throw strikes as they walked 11 batters and allowed 12 runs against the Eagles.
“If you get a chance to play and perform, take advantage of it,” head coach Bob Whalen said after the game. “You never know when your next opportunity is going to come.”
Last Friday, the team headed to Rhode Island for a three-game series against Brown. Game one featured an impressive outing from starting pitcher Eddie Albert ’26, who allowed just one run on three hits through six innings.
“A big aspect that we focused on during our preparation for the game was executing pitches with two strikes,” said Albert. “I felt like we did a good job as a pitching staff doing so.”
Albert’s preparation paid off, as he struck out seven batters and led the team to a 5-4 win in extra innings. Albert’s 34 strikeouts on the season leads the Big Green pitching staff. The game turned when Ethan Brown ’27 hit a single in the top of the eleventh to bring Taer Rodriguez ’26 home on a throwing error from Brown’s shortstop, pushing Dartmouth ahead by one run. Danny Will ’25 — who posted 3.1 innings pitched and no earned runs — closed out the first game.
The Big Green’s bats went cold in game two, losing 4-1 with just seven hits. Rodriguez was a bright spot, though, continuing his impressive batting season with three hits on the day. His .370 batting average and 34 hits leads the Dartmouth offense through 25 games.
The final game of the series began on Saturday, April 12 to decide the series winner. Nate Isler ’27 started on the mound for the Big Green, stretching 6.2 innings with just two earned runs on five hits. The series finale was tied at 2-2 headed into the bottom of the ninth inning, but a two-out double down the left field line scored the winning run in walk-off fashion for Brown, who clinched their first series win of the season.
The Big Green got a chance to bounce back against Siena College on the road this Wednesday, and capitalized with a 9-8 victory over the Saints. Rodriguez, A.J. DeMastrie ’27 and Stefan Di Corrado ’28 all posted two hits in an impressive offensive showing that fueled the win. The team will bring that much-needed momentum into a three-game series at Columbia University this weekend.
“We’re all just excited to get down there and play some high-stakes games,” said Brown. “We know we need a series win to stay alive, so that’s definitely our team goal.”
Albert agreed, saying that “[the team’s] most important goal for this weekend is to win a series and give ourselves a chance to make the Ivy League playoff.”
The first pitch at Columbia is set for Saturday at 11:30 a.m., with game two following immediately after. The series finale is on Sunday, April 20 at noon as the Big Green fight with the Lions for a playoff spot.
