Skiing takes second in UNH Carnival, alpine finishes UVM races

The ski team won second place at the University of New Hampshire Carnival in Jackson this weekend, running on the strength of a solid Nordic performance. Three Dartmouth skiers reached the podium in the two freestyle events.

Silas Talbot ’15 edged out teammate Fabian Stocek ’17 by a tenth of a second in the 20K freestyle race. It was Talbot’s second win of the year, fresh off his victory in the 10K Classic last weekend at the Colby Carnival. After hanging back for the first lap, Talbot took a lead in the second lap that he would not relinquish. Stocek came on hard in the final lap to make it close.

The Big Green dominated the 20K, finishing one-two-seven-eight. David Sinclair ’14 and Cameron Woodworth ’14 crossed the line in seventh and eighth. The team won the event with 132 points, 47 points clear of second-place Laval University from Quebec.

“We’ve had some good training in the last two weeks,” Talbot said. “It’s been nice to ski all week on the fresh snow.”

Annie Hart ’14 got her fourth consecutive podium this season, finishing the 15K race in second place with a time of 42:45.4. Catamount skiers finished first and third, but a four-five finish by Corey Stock ’16 and Emily Hannah ’16 gave the Big Green the event win.

Hart, women’s cross-country head coach Cami Thompson Graves said, skied well.

“She is a great leader for many of the underclassmen,” she added.

The women’s alpine team finished second in the giant slalom, 33 points behind the UVM team. Abby Fucigna ’15 was the first of the Big Green skiers to finish, claiming the fifth spot with a combined time of 2:28.00. Her teammate Lizzie Kistler ’16 finished in 2:28.33, good for seventh.

The women’s team also reached a second place finish in the slalom. Kistler led the Big Green with a spot on the podium, placing second. Sara Kikut ’16 and Rose Caston ’16 finished sixth and 18th, respectively.

Once again, the Big Green had to battle the weather conditions. The snow conditions at Cannon Mountain forced the alpine conditions to be moved to Attitash Mountain on Friday before returning to Cannon on Saturday.

The cold temperatures on Friday, coupled with the tough terrain, caused many of the players to catch air, women’s alpine head coach Chip Knight said.

The men’s alpine team was led by the duo of Dylan Brooks ’17 and Sam Macomber ’16 in the giant slalom, finishing seventh and eighth respectively. The Big Green placed fourth in the event, behind teams from UVM, Middlebury College and UNH. On Saturday, Ben Morse ’14 had the best Big Green performance in the slalom event, finishing in ninth place with a time of 1:31.70. Dartmouth placed fourth in the event with 85 points.

On Sunday, the alpine team made up their canceled events from the UVM Carnival. Led by a first place finish by Kistler, the Dartmouth women won the slalom event. Morse was the best Big Green men’s slalom finisher, finishing sixth. On the strength of three top-five finishes, the Catamounts won the men’s slalom event.

Kikut and Maise Ide ’16 rounded out the scoring for the Big Green with sixth and ninth place finishes, respectively. Dylan Brooks ’17 and Mathieu Bertrand ’14 finished 12th and 14th.

The team will make up the canceled Nordic events at the UVM Carnival next weekend in Stowe, Vt.
