Big Green athletes receive awards for performance, service

Several Big Green varsity student-athletes were honored over the past few weeks with end-of-the-year awards and honors for their performance both inside and outside of the athletics realm.

Baseball

Nick Santomauro '10 was named Ivy Player of the Year, while Joe Sclafani '12 won Ivy League Rookie of the Year honors for the Ivy champion Big Green baseball team. In total, the Big Green had nine players win All-Ivy honors. Santomauro also won the Blair Bat for being the Ivy League's top hitter with a .473 batting average in Ivy League play. Sclafani hit .354 this year, sixth among those in the Ivy League, with 56 hits and 47 runs scored.

Outfielder Jim Wren '10 and designated hitter Ray Allen '09 joined Santomauro and Sclafani on the All-Ivy first team.

Men's Soccer

The Ivy Champion men's soccer team gave out its end-of-the-year awards last Friday. Craig Henderson '09 was named the team's for Most Valuable Player. The senior was the unanimous Ivy League Player of the Year and was named to the All-Northeast and All-Ivy teams.

Lucky Mkosana '12 was named the team's Rookie of the Year. Mkosana led both Dartmouth and the Ivy League in scoring with 24 points, including 11 goals. Mkosana was also the unanimous Ivy League Rookie of the Year.

Women's Hockey

Goaltender Carli Clemis '09 was named to the ESPN The Magazine's Academic All-District first team on Thursday. The requirements for the award are to be a starter and maintain a 3.20 grade point average throughout the player's career. Clemis will graduate this spring with a degree in biology. She had five shutout victories this season, three of which came in consecutive games, and set Dartmouth career records with 5,770 minutes played, 98 games played and 10 postseason victories.

This year, the Big Green won the ECAC hockey tournament title and earned a bid to the NCAA tournament, where Dartmouth fell to the top-seeded University of Wisconsin in the first round.

The team named captain Shannon Bowman '09 its Most Valuable Player. Reagan Fischer '12 was named the team's Rookie of the Year. Fischer scored 15 goals this season, including two goals and an assist in a playoff victory over Colgate.

Softball

The Big Green softball team announced its end-of-year awards on Tuesday. This year, the team won the North Division of the Ivy League and took Cornell to a decisive game three in the Ivy League championship.

Captain Ashley Gleason '09, who started all 46 games this season, was named the team's Most Valuable Player. Gleason was also named to the All-Ivy second team. She hit .347 in league games with 25 hits this year.

Women's Tennis

Molly Scott '11 was voted the Big Green women's tennis team's Most Valuable Player by team members. Scott, who played in both the No. 1 singles spot and No. 1 doubles spot, was also named an Intercollegiate Tennis Association Player to Watch for the East Region.

Jesse Adler '10 was selected as one of two 2009 Wilson/ITA Internship Award winners, for which she recieved an internship with Wilson Sporting Goods in Chicago, Ill., over the summer.

Women's Crew

Kathryn Twyman '09 was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District First Team by the College Sports Information Directors of America on Thursday. Twyman earned a spot on one of two At-Large teams, which includes athletes from a variety of sports. Twyman has been a member of the varsity eight boat for the last three years, and will compete at the NCAA Rowing Championship in Cherry Hill, N.J., from May 29 to 31. Twyman's boat has amassed a 25-13 in the past three years.

Men's Golf

Peter Williamson '12 became the first Big Green golfer on the men's team to win the Ivy League Championship since 1995, an effort that helped earn him the inaugural Ivy League Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year awards. Williamson placed 41st overall at the Northeast Regional division in the 2009 NCAA Men's Division I Golf Championship.

Men's Track and Field

Men's track and field team members Tim Wunderlich '09 and Thomas Robbins '11 were both chosen as second team All-Ivy after their performances at the Heptagonal Championships in Philadelphia, Pa., earlier this month. Wulderlich was selected for the All-Ivy second team in two events -- the javelin throw and the decathlon. Wunderlich was a member of the All-Ivy first team last year in the decathlon.

Robbins earned his second team All-Ivy spot in the 1500-meter event after he tied for first with Princeton's Michael Maag at the Heptagonal Championships with a time of 3:49.02.

Men's Lacrosse

Despite a 4-11, (1-5 Ivy) record, two Big Green men's lacrosse players were named to the 2009 Turfer/NEILA All-New England Team. Jimmy Mullen '09 earned a spot on the first team, while Casey Hingtgen '10 was honored with second team All-New England.

Women's Lacrosse

The Big Green women's lacrosse team had five players earn All-Ivy honors this season. Kat Collins '11 was a unanimous choice for first team All-Ivy, and is joined on the team by fellow Big Green laxer Julie Wadland '10.

Katherine Chiusano '09 and Colleen Olsen '10 were both named to All-Ivy second team, while Greta Meyer '11 received an honorable mention.

Olsen was also honored with the Class of 1948 Scholar-Athlete Award earlier this week.

Women's Soccer

After completing its spring schedule, the Big Green women's soccer team had two players receive honors at the Dartmouth athletics department's annual Celebration of Excellence awards ceremony. Becky Poskin '09 and Myra Sack '10 shared the Class of 1950 Award which is given to the "student-athlete who has demonstrated the most extraordinary commitment to community service."

Poskin and Sac received the award for their work with Athletes United, an organization they co-founded to provide a cost-free sports league for youth in the Upper Valley.

Women's Track and Field

Alex Tanner '11 was named first team All-Ivy for her record-breaking time in the 400-meter hurdles, while Karen Woolley '09, Nathalie Todd-Zebell '09 and Emily Daly '09 were named to the All-Ivy second team in their respective events.

Woolley took second place in the heptathlon at Heps, racking up 4754 points and taking first place in the javelin throw, the 800-meter and the 100-meter hurdles.

Daly placed second in the hammer throw at Heps. She was was named to the All-Ivy first team last season for the hammer throw.

Todd-Zebell finished up her Dartmouth athletic career by bringing home second team All-Ivy honors for her performance in the pole vault. At Heps, Todd-Zebell beat the previous Heps record of 3.88 meters with a 3.95-meter jump, giving her a second-place finish. She was also a member of the All-Ivy second team last year.
