From years of exposure to images of celebrities flaunting their sunglasses, I have come to associate shades with power. It makes sense -- sunglasses prevent eye contact, allowing the wearer to read others' expressions while hiding their own. They cultivate an irresistible aura of mystery, and what's even better is that anybody can wear them.
As you walk from your 10 to your 11, bundled up so only a bit of your face peeks out from your scarf, the ideal way to make yourself look like a celebrity is to wear a pair of sunglasses. The sun still shines in Hanover, after all, and who wouldn't want to be confused for a star?
There is certainly a wide selection of styles now, but the recently popular "windshield wipers" are as overexposed as their owners, like Paris and Britney, so they don't really top my list. Here are three alternatives that can make anyone look like a star.
Urban Outfitters Flat Tops
It always pleases me to find cute, cheap shades. The style, like so many fashionable items these days, is resurrected from the '80's and comes in six bright colors. The blue sunset-style lenses, not to mention their flat top, add to their playfulness. Can anyone say Kanye West?
Ray-Ban Wayfarers
If you haven't noticed, there are tons of pictures of celebrities in magazines donning these timeless sunglasses. Not only do they go with any outfit, but they make any person look like a star, la Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany's, and Tom Cruise in Risky Business. And what's more, Wayfarers come in several styles and colors, including the new completely foldable frame and colors like red and white.
Irresistible.
Ray-Ban Aviators
One of the most popular models is the mirrored Aviator (need I mention Tom Cruise again?), which not only reduce glare but work perfectly to prevent eye contact, too. The teardrop lenses work well on very different people, from Rachel Bilson to Johnny Knoxville. They are a universal style that projects an image of control and power.
