"This year we had many exceptional nominations," said Greg LaMontagne '07, who served as one of the masters of ceremonies alongside Caroline Barker '07.
Students were given awards based on their achievements in each of six categories: accountability, inclusivity, leadership, scholarship, brotherhood/sisterhood and service.
"It was a wonderfully successful year within the Greek communities," said Dean of Residential Life Marty Redman, who presented the awards for accountability at the beginning of the ceremonies.
CFS Administrators Deborah Carney and Megan Johnson presented the awards for Greek Woman and Man of the Year which went to Order of Omega President Ali Levine '07 of Delta Delta Delta sorority and Inter-Fraternity Council President Alex Lentz '07 of Theta Delta Chi fraternity.
"The Greek Man and Woman of the year award honors those students who have given enormous energy to making the Greek community and the Dartmouth community at large a better place," Johnson said.
The 2007 O'Connor Award for excellence in each of the six principles of the CFS community, the last and most awaited award of the ceremony, went to Tri-Delt.
Carney and Johnson presented the award for President of the Year to Lorraine Buhannic '07 of Kappa Delta Epsilon and Michael Simoni '08 of Alpha Phi Alpha.
"The presidents do such an amazing job and often do not get recognized for their work," Johnson said.
Redman awarded the Outstanding Overall Improvement Award to Alpha Chi Alpha fraternity.
The award for Most Outstanding Organizations in the Principle of Accountability went to Alpha Theta co-ed fraternity for their initiatives in peer resources, officer training programs and financial management.
Bernard Haskell, assistant director of residential operations, presented Daniel Schneider '07 with the award for Most Outstanding House Manager, describing the position as the toughest job one can have in a Greek organization.
Haskell also presented the Sustainability Award to Caroline Burns '08 of Alpha Xi Delta sorority for her efforts in promoting a more energy-efficient and environmentally conscious Greek community. This is the first time such an award has been presented. Burns has spearheaded efforts to make Greek houses more green by implementing recycling programs and announced at the event that Sustainable Dartmouth will pay for houses to install energy-efficient light bulbs.
The award for Outstanding Organizations in the Principle of Inclusivity went to the Tabard coed fraternity. Assistant Dean of Student Life Pam Misener applauded its accepting attitude, as well as the open nature of its events. The first and second runners-up were Kappa Kappa Kappa fraternity and Epsilon Kappa Theta sorority respectively.
Acting Dean of the College Dan Nelson presented the Leadership Awards. The Most Innovative Award went to Alpha Phi sorority, most notably for their firm stand against hazing. The award for Outstanding Organizations in the Principle of Leadership went to AZD for their efforts in increasing house involvement and effectiveness.
Kappa Kappa Gamma was awarded the Most Outstanding Organizations in the Principle of Service, while Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity was presented the award for Most Outstanding Organizations in the Principle of Brotherhood/Sisterhood.
"CFS organizations offer sisterhood, brotherhood, camaraderie, and belonging," said Dean of Student Life Holly Sateia.
Carey Heckman '76 was named as 2007's Outstanding Chapter Advisor for his dedication to Sig Ep.
Sig Ep presidents past and present, Jeffrey Wagner '06, David Coen '07 and Sean Walsh '08 presented Heckman with the award.
French professor John Rassias presented the award for Most Outstanding faculty member to professor Faith Beasley of the French and Italian Department, asking for a drum roll from the audience before bestowing her with the award. He went on to call her a brilliant, inspirational teacher who has earned the respect of her pupils and colleagues.
The award for Outstanding Organizations in the Principle of Scholarship went to AZD, which was also presented with the award for Highest House GPA at 3.6.
