The women's hockey team continued its impressive run through stiff ECACHL competition with a pair of convincing wins over the weekend.
The women's hockey team continued its impressive run through stiff ECACHL competition with a pair of convincing wins over the weekend.

On Friday, Dartmouth (13-3-1, 12-1-0 ECACHL) came out of the locker room ready to play and scored four goals in the first period while out-shooting Quinnipiac (6-15-0, 3-10-0 ECACHL) 22-3. Katie Weatherston '06 scored first for the Big Green off a rebound early in the period, and Sarah Parsons '10 netted the second goal for Dartmouth off an assist by Shannon Bowman '09.

Three minutes later, Caroline Ethier '07 put the Big Green up 3-0 on her seventh goal in five games off an assist from linemate Nicole Ruta '08. Apps scored the Big Green's final goal of the period to give Dartmouth a 4-0 lead going into the break.

At the start of the second period, the shaken Bobcats replaced starting goalie Laura Brennan with Janelle Wolitski. Wolitski experienced greater success against the Big Green and was able to save all nine of Dartmouth's shots on goal.

Freshman goaltender Mariel Lacina '10 had a fabulous debut for the Big Green by saving all four Bobcat attempts on goal after replacing goalie Carli Clemis '09.

"We had some good goaltending when we needed it from both Clemis and Lacina," said head coach Hudak after the game.

During the third period, Dartmouth pounded the Bobcats once again. Up 6-0 with twenty seconds left on the clock, Apps scored her second goal of the game and 26th goal of the season with a wrist shot off a long pass from Parsons making the final score a 7-0 romp for the Big Green.

Against Princeton (10-8-2, 8-4-1 ECACHL) on Saturday, the Big Green again scored quickly to gain an early lead. After receiving a no-look pass from Sarah Toupal '10, Jenna Cunningham '10 shot just inside the near post to give Dartmouth the lead two minutes into the opening period.

Princeton remained tough for the rest of the period and outshot Dartmouth 8-6, but the Tigers failed to score. The Big Green regained momentum toward the end of the period. Gray scored her second goal of the season off a slap shot giving Dartmouth a 2-0 lead heading into the first intermission.

After a scoreless second period, Princeton scored early in the third to begin a comeback attempt. Tiger Kim Pearce managed to beat Clemis on a breakaway at the 12:29 marker, closing the gap to a 2-1 Dartmouth lead. Clemis made 24 saves in the contest for her 12th win of the season.

Later in the third period, Princeton's goalie Kristin Young was pulled for an extra skater to try to give the Tigers a man advantage. Strong pressure from Dartmouth on defense prevented the Tigers from capitalizing on the chance, and Apps ended Princeton's hopes by scoring an empty note in the closing minutes to give Dartmouth a 3-1 win.

Hudak was pleased with the play of the entire team through out the weekend.

"It was a total team effort with contributions from everyone in both ends of the ice. These were two great team wins and should give us a ton of confidence going into Harvard next Friday night," said Hudak.

Dartmouth continues to battle in league play next weekend when the Big Green plays at Harvard at 7 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 12 before a non-conference match-up with University of Connecticut at Storrs, Conn. at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 13.
