The Dartmouth men and women's golf teams struggled last weekend, as both teams finished sixth at the Ivy League Championships to cap off the spring season.
Mark Christman '06 finished ninth overall in the men's championship with rounds of 75-77-80 -- 232, leading the way for the Big Green.
"I felt I had a shot at winning the tournament individually, but I made some bad decisions on the final nine holes," Christman said. "I hope to learn from this experience and bring both a team and individual title home next year."
Yale's Brian Kim took the top honors thanks to a blazing final round, finishing with 74-77-71 -- 222. The Yale Bulldogs scored 914 in the 54-hole tournament at Metedeconk National Golf Club to win their first Ivy title since 1997, breaking a three-year run by the semi-home-standing Princeton Tigers.
The Big Green finished with a total of 970 to finish sixth in a field that included every member of the Ancient Eight.
Kenan Yount '06 was 15th for Dartmouth with 84-71-85 -- 240. Rounding out the top three for the Big Green was yet another freshman, Anthony Papadopoulos, who scored 78-94-80 -- 252. Stephen Gruber '05 fired 85-85-83 -- 253, and Jeremiah Daly '04 came away with a three-round total of 270.
"However, our performance showed that big things await the team in the future," Christman added. "Tony-Papa fired two great rounds, and Kenan closed out the first day with six birdies and shooting three-under on the final nine. Being the youngest team that played in the Ivies, all we lack is experience. The talent is there."
The women's side struggled at the Ivies, placing sixth in a field of six with a three-day total of 1048. Shannon Rogers '04 carried the Dartmouth women's golf team as she was tied for 12th overall. Rogers fired 82-88-79 -- 249 at the Ridgewood Country Club.
The defending champion Bulldogs won the tournament with a 54-hole score of 948. Yale has taken five of the last seven championships. Princeton's Avery Kiser won medalist honors by three shots with a superb 79-74-73 -- 226.
Also scoring for Dartmouth were Kathy Birchall '04, 92-86-80 -- 258; Vivian Lee '03, 90-87-86 -- 263; Erika Fry '03; 97-92-92 -- 281; and Alison Bergen '04, 98-101-89 -- 288.
"I think we came back respectfully on Sunday and ended what has been a successful spring season, especially considering the bad weather," Rogers said. "I know we are all sad to see our seniors Vivian and Erika leave. The returning members of the team will be practicing this summer in anticipation of our fall season."
