To the Editor:
I am one of 14 women and men who are currently employed as "Admissions Officers" of the college. We travel the country -- the world -- representing Dartmouth and persuading the best and brightest eligible students to leave their family and friends, and move to New Hampshire for four years. As an alumna of the college, I often share stories of my personal experiences here. I speak of the unique Dartmouth community, the relationships I have had with professors and friends, and the opportunities to explore intellectual and artistic interests in a supportive environment. I am able to do my job because I believe what I say about this community. However, the recent exposure of "The Zetemouth" has shattered many of these beliefs.
How much more do we as a community need to see before we stand up and abolish a system which continues to promote misogyny and the marginalization of women on this campus? How much longer will young women be unsafe on fraternity property? How many more women and men who openly oppose the Greek system will be harassed?
All of us who condemn these actions should continue to stand together and make our disgust known. Over 400 prospective members of the class of 2005 will be here this weekend, observing our reaction to both the Psi Upsilon and Zete Psi fraternity events. These prospective students will be exposed to the shocking and repulsive truths of fraternity culture. I have spent nearly a year telling anyone who would listen about the wonderful, progressive, tolerant, inclusive place that is Dartmouth College. I humbly ask this community to help me redeem my word.
