Sociology department offers new exchange

The Sociology Department will offer a new exchange program that will send students to the University of Copenhagen annually, beginning next fall.

This will be the first foreign study program available to sociology majors, and according to Chair of the Sociology Department John Campbell, it will also provide an opportunity for anthropology and economics majors to receive credit abroad.

Students will choose up to four course offerings out of several offered in English in the University's program in Social Sciences.

The program is an exchange rather then a Foreign Study Program. As a result, one Danish student will study at Dartmouth for a full year for every three Dartmouth students that go to the University of Copenhagen each fall.

Classes will be taught by professors at the University of Copenhagen and students will have to pre-approve courses with Dartmouth departments in order to receive credit for the classes taken. However, Campbell noted this should be relatively easy because of access to syllabi on the web and the desire of the University of Copenhagen to attract foreign students.

Campbell highlighted the benefits of the location, noting that this will be Dartmouth's only program in a Scandinavian country. He also praised Copenhagen as having "one of the oldest ... and best universities in Europe" in a city that is the "epitome of how a well organized society can work."

Students will live in apartments or flats with other students. Tuition will be paid to Dartmouth, and room and board in Copenhagen is estimated to be roughly the same as that of living on campus, though students will be responsible travel costs.

Students who are receiving financial aid will be eligible to receive aid in the program, similar to the College's other study-abroad options.

While Campbell estimates sending three Dartmouth students next fall, the number could increase depending on student interest.

Sociology majors were polled last year and Campbell said they showed consistent support and excitement for the program.

Applications can be obtained from the Off-Campus Programs office and are due on February 1 along with two letters of recommendation.

The University of Copenhagen has a fall semester from the beginning of September until the end of December, roughly corresponding with Dartmouth's Fall term.
