Panhell elects Kremer '01 as pres.

The Panhellenic council -- the self-governing body of the College's sorority system -- elected Alexandra Kremer '01 of Delta Delta Delta sorority as its new president last night.

Julie Calderon '01 of Alpha Xi Delta sorority was elected vice-president for the Spring and Fall terms. Megan Steven '02, also of Alpha Xi, will serve as vice-president in the interim this winter while Calderon completes her term as president of her own sorority; the two offices cannot be held simultaneously.

With the shadow of the Initiative looming over the Greek system, the officers remained strong in their resolve to uphold the integrity of the single-sex sorority system.

"I would like sororities to be a strong force on this campus," Kremer said.

Steven made a similar statement. "I want to make sure that there is still a place for women to get together. I've only found that in my sorority."

When asked how they might deal with the steering committee's announcement of its recommendations tomorrow, the new officers agreed that attention to detail in the document itself in addition to active discussion of its individual proposals will be important in the coming weeks.

"It is important to stay involved [in the process]," Steven said.

Indeed, with the uncertainty that permeated the campus last night, the officers were unable to offer any concrete plans for the new year.

"Panhell would love to work with the College to add another sorority, but of course that depends on the Initiative," Calderon said.

Other newly elected Panhell officers include Secretary Regan Murphy '02 of Epsilon Kappa Theta, Treasurer Elizabeth Topping '02 also of Epsilon Kappa Theta, Publicity Officer Ann Cloudman '02 of Sigma Delta, Programming Officer Katie Stewart '01 of Tri Delta, Judiciary Committee Representative Erin Naipo '02 of Kappa Kappa Gamma, and Judiciary Committee Representative Alternate Kendra Kemp '02 of Epsilon Kappa Theta.

The officers agreed that, whatever happens on Monday, it will be important to operate as a solid unit.

According to Calderon, "it will be important to work together as a group of women to bring out the best points in the sorority system."
