The Hanover Police arrested Peter Cataldo '00 early Saturday morning for trespassing on College property, Captain Chris O'Connor confirmed yesterday.
According to O'Connor, Cataldo was served a written notice by Safety and Security late Friday night that he was not allowed to be on College property. On Saturday, the police arrested Cataldo after discovering him near Fayerweather hill at approximately 1 a.m.
Cataldo was charged with criminal trespass and released on $500 bail. An arraignment date is set for Dec. 14 in Lebanon District Court.
When contacted by The Dartmouth last night at his home in Rome, N.Y., Cataldo declined any comment.
On Friday, the police searched Cataldo's room in Topliff residence hall in relation to a threat found Wednesday morning on the message board of Charles Gussow '01, the undergraduate advisor on Cataldo's floor. The threat read "KKK, Kill Kosher Kykes."
As of last night, no charges have been made in the case.
The police seized several items in the search, O'Connor said.
He added that the search was conducted to "obtain any information that could link the resident, or any other [people] that had access to that room, to the alleged offense."
On Wednesday evening, after the discovery of the threat, Cataldo was evicted by Safety and Security from his first-floor Topliff residence.
The threat is classified as "criminally threatening behavior" and can be prosecuted by state law.
O'Connor would not confirm or deny that the police obtained a handwriting sample from Cataldo, but would only say that in a case such as this, a handwriting sample is important to establishing a link between the evidence and any suspects.
O'Connor confirmed that on Wednesday, the Hanover Police took Gussow's message board into custody.
Senior Associate Dean of the College Dan Nelson declined to comment on the investigation or Cataldo's current status as a student at Dartmouth.
"All I can say is that a student who may have been responsible for a variety of behaviors that are in violation of the College's Standards of Conduct is no longer on campus and is not allowed on campus without permission," Nelson said.
In addition to the threat found on Monday, the slur "Jews Sucks" was discovered on Gussow's message board on Oct. 30, and the phrase "Hitler was a great man" was found on the same board last Tuesday.
Gussow said that on Wednesday, shortly before the eviction, Cataldo entered his room and told him "I hate the Jews."
Gussow also said that on the Friday Nov. 6, Cataldo twice made references to buying a gun.
Cataldo stayed in the Hanover Inn until Friday at 1 p.m., when it was confirmed that he checked out.
