Pres. hopeful Bradley to visit Hanover Sunday

Democratic Presidential candidate Bill Bradley will visit Hanover Sunday to meet with a group of 10 to 15 Dartmouth student supporters who are assisting with his campaign.

The students will meet with the former New Jersey senator and New York Knick at the home of Chuck Wira, a Dartmouth Medical School physiology professor. Scott Given '02 said Bradley's visit will be a chance to "sit and discuss issues" such as the Kosovo situation and some of the candidate's goals in his agenda such as campaign finance reform and the fight against poverty.

Given told The Dartmouth the group of student volunteers were assembled after they contacted Bradley's homepage on the Internet. On the webpage Given indicated interest in helping promote Bradley's campaign at Dartmouth.

A week later Brain Selander, the New Hampshire coordinator for Bradley's campaign, contacted Given with names of other Dartmouth students who also visited the web site and indicated interest in supporting Bradley. Since then the group of students has expanded primarily by word of mouth.

The students are working with the national campaign headquarters to generate support for Bradley, a graduate of Princeton University, at Dartmouth. Bradley's national campaign chairman visited Dartmouth last term and met with students and adult supporters in the Rockefeller Center.

Jason Spitalnick '02 said Bradley's campaign will be very "grass roots" oriented and the students will be "directly involved." He added that he has personally met with Bradley twice and said he is "very accessible." Some of the students plan to work on Bradley's campaign this summer.

The students are aided by the adult support of the Rauh couple. John Rauh ran for a New Hampshire U.S. Senate seat in 1992 and his wife Mary ran for the U.S. House of Representatives in the second district of New Hampshire in 1998.

This will be Bradley's third visit to New Hampshire. On Saturday, Bradley will speak at the New Hampshire Democratic Convention in Manchester.

On Sunday, Bradley plans to visit several towns in New Hampshire in addition to his stop in Hanover. Bradley first declared his candidacy for president on January 12. He first visited New Hampshire on January 20 and returned on February 28.
