To the Editor:
I was very saddened to hear that the majority of the Student Assembly raised their hands in support of locking dorm entrances as reported in yesterday's The Dartmouth. This proposal would take away from the spirit of openness and trust that pervades this campus and should not be taken lightly.
Every time I walk through an unlocked dorm door, I do it with pride. It makes me happy to know that here at Dartmouth, there is a strong presumption of honor and trust. It was one of the things which, as a prospective, made me so excited about Dartmouth.
Dartmouth should be proud to be one of the few remaining colleges in the country with open dorm doors. While security is a grave concern, we should consider whether locks would necessarily stop unwanted visitors.
During party weekends, experience has shown that they haven't. If dorm locks are absolutely necessary to protect Dartmouth students, then our spirit of trust will submit to modernity. But we should not give up unlocked doors without considering what we are losing.
