For the next two weeks, the Hopkins Center for the Performing Arts and the drama department will feature sneak previews of works-in-progress by various artists with the New York Theatre Workshop.
Established in 1979, the NYTW has been coming to Dartmouth every year since 1992 and features works in varying stages of development. In the past, many NYTW readings have become fully staged productions -- some going on to be huge hits, such as the musical "Rent" and "Angels in America."
"Rent" was performed at the NYTW in 1995 at the Hop, well before it went on to win such awards as a Pulitzer Prize, a Tony Award and the New York Drama Critics Award.
This year the NYTW brings six performances to the Hop's Warner Bentley theater.
On Saturday, Aug. 2 at 7 p.m., The Five Lesbian Brothers will perform "Brides of the Moon," and comedic performer Reno will give a rendition of her new semi-autobiographical sketch at 10 p.m.
The Five Lesbian Brothers are an all-women group, and "Brides of the Moon" is about a "sci-fi sex-trip to the moon, controlled by a malfunctioning microwave in a suburban Ohio kitchen," according to a brochure published by the Hop.
On Saturday, Aug. 9 at 7 p.m., Fanni V. Green will present "Tillers," a combination of story, poetry and song about her past in the South. At 10 p.m., Susan Vittuci will present "Love's Fowl," a multi-puppet opera about Chicken Little.
Nilo Cruz will perform his play "Two Sisters and a Piano" at 7 p.m. on Saturday Aug. 16, a story of two women under house-arrest in Cuba. Dael Orlandersmith will read from a precursor piece for her new play "Race" at 10 p.m. Last year Orlandersmith read from a one-woman work-in-progress at the NYTW.
All tickets are $5 for general admission and $3 for students.
In addition to performances, brown bag lunch presentations with artists will take place on Tuesdays at noon at the top of the Hop.
