"Georgia" is a film about two sisters. The first, Sadie, is a girl who desperately wants to be a famous singer. The problem is that although she has the ambition and determination, she cannot sing.
On the other hand, her sister Georgia has the singing career that Sadie wants in addition to her dream of a husband, kids and the white picket fence.
The film has been praised for its superb acting. Jennifer Jason Leigh, who plays the role of Sadie, manages to portray the messed-up, drugged-out Sadie with candor, but also shows the spirit beneath the wreckage which makes the audience care for her in the same way her sister does.
Leigh is probably one of the best actresses when it comes to portraying quirky women -- she has been the bitter daughter in "Dolores Claiborne," a phone-sex housewife in "Shortcuts" and a psycho roommate in "Single White Female."
Another superb performance comes from Mare Winningham who plays Georgia, Sadie's "perfect" sister, a role which won her an Oscar nomination for best supporting actress.
Like Leigh, Winningham manages to show what is beneath the surface in her character. She does not merely show the responsible, perfect side of Georgia, but also the sadness which is underneath this exterior as well.
While these two characters may seem totally different from each other, they are still sisters and have an unbreakable bond between them.
