Neither of the Big Green track squads had its strongest showing this past weekend at New England championships, mostly because athletes from both squads sat the meet out.
Fellow Ivy-Leaguer Brown won the men's meet held at Williams. Northeastern won the women's meet at Tufts with 119.5 points. The Dartmouth women finished ninth with 25 points, missing eighth place by a single point.
Women:
While the women did not turn in a particularly strong team showing, several individuals ran to impressive finishes.
Having won the 10,000 meter at Heps two weekends ago, Kristin Pierce '96 came up big in the 5,000 at New Englands, winning in a time of 17:23.97 and taking All-New England honors.
Also earning honors in the 5,000 was Emily Hodgson '98 who finished third in 17:57.60.
Beth Crenshaw '99 received honors for her fourth place finish in the 3,000 meter, with a 10:18.46. Also coming in fourth and earning honors was Helene Sisti '96 in the 400 meter hurdles. Sisti's time was 1:06.41.
Wendy Skelton '99 was the other athlete to earn All-New England honors. Skelton finished sixth with a 130-7 in the discus.
The team's ninth place finish in the field of 20 schools can be largely attributed to the unusually small number of athletes who went to the meet. A group of the Big Green women sat out from the meet in order to prepare for ECAC Championships which begin this Friday at George Mason University.
Men:
After the first day of competition the men were tied for second place with Boston College at 24 points. Eventual winner Brown led the pack with 42 points.
Gordon Spaeth '97 had a strong showing in the decathlon, finishing second with 6,138 points.
The team saw a pair of third place finishes from Michael Fortier '97 in the 5,000 (15:01.74) and Marc McDonald '96 in the 10,000 (31:56.56).
Bill Tsiaras '99 finished fifth in the 5,000 (15:02.82), while Alex Ghanotakis '97 was fifth in the hammer. Ghanotakis' throw of 192-10 qualified him for IC4A's.
Both Tsiaras' and Fortier's times were personal records.
All but one of the team's sprinters has a pulled hamstring. Also curbing the team's success was the fact that many of the men sat out from New Englands in preparation for IC4A championships. IC4A's will be at George Mason this weekend.
