With the new program allowing them to vote over the Internet, seniors have elected their 20 representatives to serve on the Senior Executive Committee.
The committee acts primarily as a liaison between the class and the Alumni Council.
The members of the committee serve for five years until the fifth year class reunion in 2001.
Every graduating class elects its own committee, and this was the first year seniors could vote through the World Wide Web, said Tom Caputo, vice president of the Class of 1996 and a newly-elected member of the committee.
"Approximately 337 students voted -- which is a strong turnout," said Linda Kennedy, associate director of Student Activities and chair of the Election Advisory Committee. The students were given a two-day time frame in which to vote.
Class of 1996 President Brendan Doherty said, "Everyone had a positive reaction to the voting process. They found the process quick and easy." Doherty was also elected to the committee.
New members of the Senior Executive Committee said they were excited to help keep members of the Class of 1996 in touch with one another after graduation and to carry out the committee's administrative roles.
In past years, the committee has published a class newsletter, organized reunions and helped Alumni Funds raise money for the College.
The committee is also the policy-making and governing body for the class. It plays an active roles in all class programming during Spring term and monitors the activities and responsibilities of the class officers.
Jack Kolodny '96, who was also elected to the committee, said seniors only had to sign up to run in the election.
"After being at Dartmouth for four years I was interested in staying a part of Dartmouth and keeping in touch with campus," Kolodny said.
Committee member Hina Ahmed '96 said she decided to run since she has been active in the class council since her freshman year and wanted a chance to continue to work for the class.
Shakari Cameron '96, another member newly-elected to the committee, said she felt the committee would be a great way to stay connected with the campus and campus issues.
As a part of the council, Christopher Marston '96 said he hopes the council can continue with the great work the class council has done over the past four years.
Monica Oberkofler '96, another new member, said, "Members of "the Class of 1996 [have] built many friendships with each other during the past four years."
"As a member of the Executive Committee, I hope I can help encourage and facilitate these connections that we have all established," Oberkofler continued.
Caputo said the committee's officers will be elected during one of its first meetings. The committee will hold its first meeting this term, but the committee has not yet established a date, he said.
The other new members of the committee are seniors Shelley Arakawa, Della Bennett, Laura Bennett, Jim Brennan, Danielle Brune, Tim Cross, Pace Duckenfield, Rosaida Felipe, Leslie Jennings, Meredith Martin, Kelii Opulauoho, Matthew Wiltshire and Pei Yee.
