Hanover dining provides wide range of cuisine, prices

Winter Carnival inevitably attracts out-of-town visitors, family and friends who, Full Fare and Home Plate notwithstanding, want to sample some of Hanover's off-campus dining options. The Carnival holiday provides an excellent excuse to investigate the many local restaurants and their widely varying cuisines.

5 Olde Nugget Alley

Various contemporary entrees, including Mexican dishes, are available at 5 Olde Nugget Alley. A collection of antiques adds flair to 5 Olde's dining room. Dinners are about $10 (643-5081).

C&A's House of Pizza

With pizza prices ranging from as low as $4.50 for a small to as little as $7.50 for a large, C&A's House of Pizza is often frequented by the money-conscious student. C&A's also offers pasta, hot and cold grinders. Offering free delivery, it is located on 17 Lebanon St. (643-2966).

Cafe Buon Gustaio

Cafe Buon Gustaio, on 72 South Main St., is known for its Italian dishes and intimate ambiance. It offers pastas, salads and an extensive wine list. Reservations are recommended (643-5711).

The Daniel Webster Room

The only restaurant in New Hampshire to receive the AAA Four Diamond Award, The Daniel Webster Room is in the Hanover Inn, located next to the Hopkins Center for Performing Arts at one end of the Dartmouth Green. Perhaps the most upscale restaurant in Hanover, this restaurant serves artfully presented entrees at prices of up to $24. Reservations are encouraged for dinner and weekend dining (643-4300).

Everything But Anchovies

Everything But Anchovies' pizzas range in price from $4 for a personal pizza to $50 for a giant 24-incher. An extremely wide variety of appetizers, salads, soups, sandwiches, and ice cream are also available at EBAs, which is located on 5 Allen St. (643-6135).

Foodee's

Foodee's, located on 45 Lyme Road, was the winner of the Best Pizza in New England Contest in 1990. They offer five different kinds of crusts and their classic pizzas range from $4 to $17. Mediterranean, Mexican and Hawaiian pies are just a few of the exotic dishes available (643-8852).

The Ivy Grill

Students can charge their meals to their identification cards at The Ivy Grill, also located in the Hanover Inn. Frequented by students and community members alike, The Grill has many popular selections, including Chinese wings and vegetable chimichangas. Meal prices range from $7 to $14 (643-4300).

Jesse's

Jesse's Steaks, Seafood and Tavern has dinners priced at about $15. Reservations are encouraged. Jesse's is located on Route 120 (643-4111).

The Jewel of India

Located on 27 Lebanon St., The Jewel of India offers North Indian foods from curries to desserts. Prices range between $7 and $18. Jewel of India offers Sunday brunch hours, take out and delivery. Reservations are necessary (643-2217).

Lou's

Lou's, located on 30 South Main St., is one of the most popular off-campus eateries visited by students at the College. It has soups, salads and burgers, among other things, and dinners are priced at about $7. Lou's has its own bakery and serves breakfast all day (643-3321).

Molly's Balloon

Specializing in Mexican food, Molly's also has pastas, soups and stir fries at $8 to $15. This smoke-free restaurant is also the home of the $2 margarita. It is located on 43 South Main St. (643-2570).

Mrs. Ou's

Mrs. Ou's, of 44 South Main St., has Cantonese cuisine selections prepared by several chefs from Fu's in New York City. Popular with locals, faculty and students, it offers entrees priced between $5 to $13 (643-8866).

Murphy's Tavern

The cozy atmosphere of Murphy's Tavern invites you to stay and enjoy its soups, fajitas, sandwiches, steak and seafood, priced from $5 to $13. Murphy's serves beer and drinks and has a dart board and scheduled entertainment. It is located on 11 South Main St. (643-4075).

Old Pete's Tavern

Formerly known as Peter Christian's Tavern, Old Pete's is still the Hanover restaurant of choice for many. Its wooden door opens to a medieval setting known for its entertainment, great drinks, onion soup and homemade mustard. The Tavern offers sandwiches at $3 to $6 and dinners at $9. It is on 39 South Main St. (643-2345).

Panda House and Bamboo Garden

Panda House Chinese Restaurant, which professes to "bring Chinatown to you," has an assortment of $5 appetizers and a wide range of entrees priced from $7 to $15. Free delivery is offered in Hanover for orders of over $10. The Bamboo Garden offers exquisite Japanese cuisine with prices between $3 and $26. Panda House and Bamboo Garden are located on 3 Lebanon St. (643-1290).
