Three student-and alumni-run firms move: Wheelock Books, Black Phoenix and Green Card take advantage of close location to campus

In an effort to get closer to the heart of campus, three local businesses run by Dartmouth students and alumni moved into adjoining offices in the Stilts Center on West Wheelock Street, across from the Collis Center.

Wheelock Books and Black Phoenix Sportswear are housed in the western half of the facility and the Hanover Green Card is in the eastern wing.

Wheelock Books has one large room, which it shares with Black Phoenix, and a small administrative office. The Green Card has a main room and several smaller offices off it. The three businesses were previously located in separate offices above Peter Christian's Tavern on South Main Street.

Christine Krady, the Green Card's director of operations, said the main reason behind the move was the additional space the new offices provided.

"Our old office was the size of that room," she said, gesturing to a closet- sized office that is now one of several occupied by the Green Card. She also cited the better location of the new site as a reason behind the move.

Whit Spaulding '87, who owns and operates Wheelock Books, said space and location were major considerations in the move as well."We were running out of space in the old location and this place is just much bigger, and located closer to campus," he said.

Spaulding said the newer location also provides the opportunity for future expansion.

"I've always thought that maybe there were other schools we could get involved with," he said.

Wheelock Books, founded in 1992, is an alumni-run, independent bookstore that advertises discount rates on textbooks for College classes. All of the employees of the store are either alumni or students of the College, Spaulding said.

The Hanover Green Card, founded in 1993 by Mitch Jacobs '94, offers Dartmouth students a debit card that can be used in conjunction with promotional offers at local restaurants and businesses.

Black Phoenix is owned by two Dartmouth undergraduates --Baron Carlson '96 and Jacob Capps '96. Black Phoenix offers athletic-wear at discount prices. Black Phoenix shared space with Wheelock Books at its old location as well.

The space in Stilts Center was formerly occupied by the architectural firm Bandwell, White, Arnold and Hemberger.

Although Spaulding declined to detail the exact terms of the agreement with the architectural firm, he said that it is a "multi- year" contract.

Krady said the Green Card moved in on Aug. 1, and Spaulding said Wheelock and Black Phoenix also relocated during the summer.
