Cate Avoes '98 was arrested early Sunday morning on a charge of burglary with the intent to commit criminal mischief when she broke into a Dartmouth professor's home, according to a press release from Hanover Police.
According to the release, Avoes, 19, was arrested just after midnight in the act of vandalism in the kitchen area of the residence of Philosophy Instructor David Sosa.
The release stated police responded to a 911 call from the downstairs tenants of the house, who reported hearing breaking glass in the main living area of the residence.
Avoes is acquainted with Sosa, the release stated, but no further details were available as to the motive.
"I was making a film, and I had David Sosa's permission to be in the house to film a scene that involved a little breakage, but the people downstairs hadn't been told. Evidently they thought that I was a nasty burglar, so they called the police," Avoes wrote in an electronic-mail message to The Dartmouth last night. "Getting arrested seemed rather funny at the time -- indeed, appropriately cinematic -- but now it's really been blown out of proportion."
"This whole situation is completely ridiculous," Avoes wrote. "The only thing that isn't silly or trivial (and therefore more ridiculous) is the fact that the police became involved."
An administrative assistant in the philosophy department said yesterday that Sosa had left Dartmouth for a fellowship at the University of California at Berkeley until next June.
Sosa was unavailable for comment.
The release also stated units from the Lebanon Police Department were called in "for assistance for this crime in progress call."
Avoes, who is on campus this term, was released on $500 personal recognizance bail on Class A felony charges of burglary with the intent to commit criminal mischief, according to the release. Her arraignment was set for Aug. 23.
