Out with the old, in with the new. Every spring the Dartmouth Rugby Football Club elects new officers and debuts an A-Side without graduating seniors. In its premiere match on Saturday at Sachem Field, the new team fell to a strong University of New Hampshire team.
UNH led the scoring with a penalty kick, but a series of effective plays in which the Dartmouth scrum got the ball to the backs ended in a try by winger Mikael Morn '97. An unsuccessful conversion left the score at 5-3.
Late in the half, a UNH forward penetrated Dartmouth's defense for a try.The conversion kick brought the score to 10-5.
In the second half, newly elected Captain Todd Aaron '96 scored a try offa penalty play, bringing the score to 10-10.
But when Dartmouth was penalized at a ruck, UNH kicked for a 13-10 lead. Though DRFC continued to attack, making several long runs towards the end, it was unable to beat the clock.
Coach Wayne Young was disappointed with the result. "UNH played a solid game. They beat us to the loose balls and converted their chances. We missed our '95s, but now the underclassmen have a better idea of what it takes to play at this level," Young said.
In women's action, the Dartmouth A-Side beat the University of Vermont 44-0. Captain Keirsten Lawton '94 said, "We dominated in the loose play and our backs beat them to the outside."
TheDWRC B-Side beat UVM 5-0 but the C-Team lost 10-0.
