ROTC report stalled

The Student Assembly decided in its general meeting last night to return a draft version of a report on the College's Reserve Officer Training Corps program to its Administrative Affairs Committee for re-evaluation.

The ROTC report, which was written following a February Assembly motion to support ROTC at the College, will be presented to the Board of Trustees at its meeting during the weekend of April 15.

Presently, the report is being fine tuned by the Executive Committee.

"We're still in Execs, working with the draft," Assembly President Nicole Artzer '94 said. "We're at a point now where we're evaluating the arguments behind keeping ROTC."

Trevor Burgess '94, an Assembly member and co-chair of the Dartmouth Gay, Lesbian and Bisexual Organization, told The Dartmouth earlier this week that he saw Brandon Del Pozo '96, who is in ROTC, working on the report last Friday.

Several Assembly members expressed concerns about the content of the report at last night's meeting.

"I do not feel that this is as much of a research paper as it is a persuasive document," Jessica Roberts '97 said.

"I have a real problem with Student Assembly not voting on this document because it is very opinionated and very persuasive," she said.

Other members argued that the motion had already been passed and no more discussion is necessary.

Artzer said there is flexibility in dealing with the motion.

She said Assembly members may make amendments to the motion at the Administrative Affairs Committee meeting on Thursday night, when they will vote to return the motion to the floor or abandon it.

Artzer said students who want to voice their opinions about the ROTC report should contact an Assembly member.

The Assembly also passed a motion last night to donate $1,500 to sponsor a speaker for the Senior Symposium this weekend.
