Bob Kempainen '88 ran out of Dartmouth six years ago as a five-time All-American. He hasn't stopped running since.
Last November, Kampainen finished second in the New York City Marathon, the best American finish in the prestigious race since 1989.
Yesterday, the Dartmouth graduate added a seventh place finish in the Boston Marathon to his treasure trove of running accomplishments.
More importantly, though, the 27-year-old medical student at Minnesota broke the American record. Kempainen's time of 2:08:47 was 5 seconds faster than the previous mark set by Alberto Salazar at Boston in 1982.
Traditionally a runner's enemy, this year's Boston marathon proved to be the runner's best supporter. Idyllic temperatures in the mid-50s and a very generous 19 mph tailwind aided Kempainen's run and allowed for records in all major categories.
Neither Kempainen nor his parents were available for comment.
