Track runs at Heps

The men's and women's track teams were less than perfect this past weekend at the annual Heptagonal Track and Field Championships held at Harvard University.

The women compiled 43 points, finishing seventh out of 10 teams. Brown University dominated the meet with 118.5 points. Harvard placed second with 72.5.

Co-captain Candi Shoemaker '94 and Amy Winchester '96 placed first and third, respectively in the shot put.

Sophomore standout Maribel Sanchez '96 finished second in the mile with a time of 4:47.86. Following close behind Sanchez was Kristin Manwearing '96, crossing the line in 4:46.42 for a fourth place finish.

The two-mile relay team settled for a second place finish with a time of 9:06.93.

The men placed fifth out of 10 teams with 63 points. Princeton University captured first place with 124.5 points.

Aaron Culliney '96 won the 800 meters race, crossing the line in 1:50.81. The young standout comes off a string of successful performances this season in the both the 800 and 500 meter race.

Adam Nelson '97, Dartmouth record holder in the shot put, came in first with a throw of 57-2.

The Big Green mile relay team also placed first with a time of 3:17.37.

Some speedy seniors also turned in strong performances. Sam Wilbur was third in the 3,000 meters, followed by co-captain Derek West in fifth place. Geoff Zawtocki captured third place in the 500 meter run; and Dan Heinold was fifth in the pole vault with a personal best of 16-foot-one.

Heinold said the team's finish was disappointing, but will only improve.

"I was hoping we would do better but the talent on this team has yet to mature," Heinold said. "We get stronger with every performance."
