If you have never seen tap dancing up close than you are really missing some of the most exciting and intense dancing ever performed.
Luckily, tomorrow night "Fascinating Rythmns" will be performed in The Hopkins Center for the Performing Arts, featuring several world renowned tap dancers in what should be an inspirational show.
One of the dancers, Savion Glover, 19, took to the Broadway stage in the title role of "The Tap Dance Kid," at age 12 and co-starred with Gregory Hines and Sammy Davis Jr. in "Taps" at age 14.
Glover will be accompanied by all-time great tappper Jimmy Slyde, whose career has spanned more than four decades. Together, Glover and Slyde have been ripping stages apart for years and both were recently nominated for Tony Awards for their performances in "Black and Blue" on Broadway.
The whole spectrum of tap styles will be represented tomorrow night. Herbin Van Cayseels will perform a blend of hip-hop, funk, bebop and swing and Josh Hilberman and Dianne Walker will present styles reflecting a new generation of tap.
The performance will follow a slide and videotape discussion at 6:45 p.m. by Duke University dance historian Sally Sommer, who will explore the history of this 20th century social art form. Tickets are $11.50 for Dartmouth students and $14.50 for reserved seats.
