Three Drinks Prevents Drunkenness

To the Editor:

I have just finished reading Jim Hall's commentary "Three Beers At The Lone Pine" (Feb. 10). The point he brings up is an important one; people should not go by a weight chart alone. Not everyone at the same weight is able to metabolize alcohol the same way.

I, for one, am unable to drink more than a couple of drinks all night; and a woman I know, who weighs 50 lbs. less than me, can pound them back all night long. Tolerance is the difference, not your weight. You need to go by how you feel, not by what the charts say you should feel. This is what responsible drinking is all about.

You will find that more and more bars and restaurants have adopted a three drink policy. No one wants to see anyone get drunk (it is not a pretty picture), least of all the young people on this campus who have so much going for them.
