Squash splits scores

The Dartmouth Women's Squash Team worked its way to a 5-4 win over Amherst College this weekend, and is now perched at 3-3 for the year. The women are in prime contention for two important league showdowns this weekend against league foes Princeton University and the University of Pennsylvania.

"Amherst put nine squash players on the courts. We put nine athletes on the court," Head Coach Chris Schutz Brownell said.

Wiith players ranked five through nine winning in the women's competition, the Big Green showed their ability to overcome inexperience with effort and athleticism.

Jennifer Gallagher '96, the lone Big Green player to win against Trinity College earlier this season, shut out her opponent, 3-0 at the number five spot.

Also defeating their Amherst opponents 3-0 were Holly Parker '96 at number six, Maura Schneider '96 at seven and Brady Beale '97 in the number nine position. Betsy Allen '95 added another win with a 3-1 victory over her opponent.

In a competition where the teams traded individual matches back and forth until the very end, it was Beale who finally pushed the Big Green over the top with a victory and the needed five-match total. Beale rebounded from a 5-8 deficit in the first game and a 3-6 deficit in the second to pull out 10-8 and 9-6 victories.

Disappointment for the men

Travelling with the women, the men experienced less-than-encouraging results, dropping matches to Amherst and Hobart College.

Hobart beat the men 5-4, counting on the added strength of the Childs twins. The twins, who transferred to Hobart from Franklin and Marshall College, played at the number two and three spots. They were the backbone of an assault that ended in an unexpected and disappointing loss for the Big Green.

Senior Craig Daily won at the number three spot in a 3-2 match, going to the last point of the match in a tie. John-Keith Wasson '96 won in a 3-0 blowout at the number five spot. David Dwyer '95 won at number seven in a 3-2 match and Chris Campbell '96 won at number nine in a 3-1 decision.

Later in the day, the Big Green men lost to Amherst 6-3. One bright spot for the team in ita loss was a come-from-behind win from Wasson. Wasson scored seven straight points in the final game to win the match 3-2. Campbell also won 3-2. Christopher Cho '96 won at the number eight spot in a 3-1 match.

The men's record now stands at 1-6 on the year as they look to improve their league standing with important matches against Penn and Princeton this weekend.
