Basketball faces Brown, Yale

The Men's Basketball Team hosts two important league games this weekend, putting its season-high three game win streak on the line against both Brown University and Yale University. Dartmouth's Ivy League record currently stands at 0-4, 4-12 overall.

The Brown Bears (2-2, 8-8), who come to town tonight, are led by guard Alan Cole and his 15.5 points per game.

Yale (2-2, 5-11) comes to Leede Arena tomorrow night, and the player to watch on the Bulldog squad is guard Damon Franklin, who averages 13.8 points per game. Another threat is forward Andy Karazim, whose 61 percent shooting percentage places him first in the Ivy League, and close to the top of the NCAA.

Dartmouth's season so far could be divided into two parts: the losses and the wins. The low point came on Jan. 15 when the Big Green lost to Harvard, extending Dartmouth's losing streak to 10 games.

Since then, coach Dave Faucher has turned things around, and the result has been wins over Boston University, Hofstra and Holy Cross. Gregg Frame '94 has been the catalyst for this dramatic reversal. In the Hofstra game, Frame scored his 1,000th career point.

Sea Lonergan '97, a definite candidate for Ivy League Rookie of the Year honors, has been holding his own at small forward. Lonergan is averaging 11 points per game.

Stan Kowalewski '94 and Jamie Halligan '95 have each contributed at the forward spot. Center Brian Gilpin '97 has played well at times too. His 7-foot height could make him a force in the Ivy League.

This weekend's games will be a good test to see where Dartmouth fits in with the rest of the league. Yale and Brown are each 2-2 in league play.

Against opponents in common with Dartmouth, results have been mixed. While Brown lost to Holy Cross, they beat Valparaiso. Dartmouth beat Holy Cross, but was blown out by Valparaiso. Yale lost to Hofstra, a team that Dartmouth had little trouble with.
